puppy training
Hello
Just wondered how many of you have been to puppy training when you got your puppy ? if i go down the route of getting a small puppy , i was thinking of booking training classes , more for sociailising as where i live there isnt a great deal of dogs , and from the ones i met when walking my mates staff some ppl had them off leads and there dogs had no recal and they came running up to my dog that was on a lead growling at him luckily he didnt respond , but if he had there could of been a fight , and i dont know anyone that i could personally walk with who has a placid dog to get mine used to dogs , so would training classes be the best thing ?
Thankyou

Re: puppy training
I didn't have Daisy from a puppy but I did basic obedience classes with her and it was great, we both really enjoyed it. If I had a puppy personally I would do classes

Re: puppy training
I would always advise training for any dog. So long as the class is a good one, it's a great way to socialise, bond and get some of that energy out. Roger went to his first class at 11 weeks old and will continue going throughout his life.

Re: puppy training
We due to start Tip's puppy class soon and I think its the right way to go. We are doing a bit of training at home too. Find a puppy class AND trainer you feel comfortable with. It is a good invesment into your pup's future.

Re: puppy training
if i lived in an area where there was alot of dogs i would do it myself , my mum was only saying this morning if i lived near her there wouldnt be a problem , shes attually goin for walks at the minute with her neighbour who has a young staffy pup to help with his socialising , but i have no one so i would have to rely on hoping that the dog would be ok with the odd dog that we would see , which i dont think is goin to be enough in the early stages , if it was any other breed i probbely wouldnt be as keen to go to classes ,but staffs have a hard enough time off ppl as it is , so at least if its well trained its a bonus , i have been brought up with dogs in this area its my mum that moved away , and never have we been to classes , but we always had border collies that were fine from the off really with other dogs, my daughter has a jack russell but he himself needs a lesson in socialising as he barks at anything thats bigger than him and doesnt really like other dogs so hes not really any use LOLella wrote:I don't do training classes no - I prefer to do it myself and socilise them again myself as well.

Re: puppy training
I've had mixed results from puppy training classes. If you can find one that lets the puppies socialise off-lead (in a controlled environment) and then does some calm training, that would be the ideal.
You are obviously doing your homework before getting your puppy, which is fantastic. I would advise that you explore the options in your area and ask if you can sit in and observe sessions before you commit.

Re: puppy training
I did it with mine as soon as she had had her injections. She loved it and it was more for me about socialisation. Everything we did we'd already started at home anyway so the actual training wasn't worth it but the socialisation she had was brilliant, wish id continued but after 2 lots of training I couldn't afford anymore

Re: puppy training
I did with Vinnie as a pup I have mixed views. I would say manly for socialisation as I had done a lot of basic training myself from day one.
