just found some family history - made me smile :)

My grandad passed away in 1992, and being 6 i have only a few memories of him. what i do remember, and what my dad has backed up, is he never spoke of his military service in ww2 (understandable) and the family knew very little of what he did. we knew he was a paratrooper, trained down the road at manchester airport (jumping into Tatton Park, where i walk Lola as its down the road form my work) and he'd faught in Burma.

my dad enquired back in 1990 on my grandads behalf on his war records and medals, something my grandad wanted nothing to do with, but all the paperwork ended up lost in my dads files, and nobody ever got round to enquiring again.

today, my dad found it, and i read through them and found he was posted with the North Staffordshire Regiment. i know he was a dog person, so i know he would have appreciated Lola.

now if you dont mind, i have some heavy research to do

That is a great type of research! My grandpa was also a paratrooper in the American 82nd airborne. However, I got to know my grandpa very well and he was with us until 2002 even though he was pushing 90. Good hunting! I know my grandpa came across many a UK jumper as they were often in similar spots. I'm partial to that branch and the history of paratrooper service in ww2. 

It is a fascinating journey to explore "our roots" and the life histories of our forebears. I was passionate about it for over 10 years and discovered much about the lives of my ancestors, and also found many distant cousins long the way.
