Female Staff
Hi everyone just looking for a bit of advice here. I've got a 7yr old female mongrel and I've got my eye on a 8 week old female staffy pup and just wanted to know if they would get on together or there would be any fighting? Or would the pup be fine considering the age gap etc !??

Re: Female Staff
Usually, it's better to do opposite sex pairings to avoid fighting. It could work out fine for you, since there's such a big age gap, but you need to be prepared for the worst. There could be fights when the staffy puppy gets older and you may have to crate and rotate, which is always a possibility with two or more dogs (especially Staffies, APBTs, AmStaffs, and other dogs that were originally bred for dog fighting). That said, there are always exceptions! Some same sex pairings work out really well and turn into life long friendships. All you can do is prepare for the worst and hope or the best.

I have only ever owned 1 but I know people here that have 2 of the same sex and it works out fine, as long as you have the time then I don't see why not although I think most recommend one of each sex

Re: Female Staff
Thanks for the quick reply! My dog just now is fine with both female/male dogs but its wether another female would be ok. Would love if it was just a straight forward thing with dogs that they would be fine with each other lol! Think its something I'll just need to try and keep a close eye on it!

Re: Female Staff
Yeah I have the time for training and socialising the pup etc. I also trained my dog I have just now and she's perfect, she's never on a lead and her re-call is perfect etc. I'll just need to keep a close eye on the pup's behaviour if I decide to go ahead with it!

Re: Female Staff
Sounds like your a great dog owner with the one you have with it being well trained and exercised, I don't think you will have any problems but of course just apply the right training, exercise and care and they usually turn out fantastic, Your older dog may even mother the new pup and they'd be perfect together, Just make sure you know the signs and set the boundaries and i'm sure you'll be fine.

It often isn't the older one you'll need to watch, but the youngster as she matures. She might try to become 'boss' and may well try to fight for the privilege. As long as you are vigilant & consistent with your training it'll probably be ok.
Having said that, I would personally always go for one of each, rather than two of the same.

Thanks, I think training a dog is fun and obviously the harder you work to train them its better in the long run! And when you see a new pup with no training and then seeing your hard work when its a little older! Yeah boundaries will be set and everything!

Yeah I'll watch the pup closely and any aggression will be nipped in the bud! I would rather a male but the mother prefer's female's!

Re: Female Staff
It's often nice to have one of each & see the way they interract, and the differences in the characters. I've had 2 females in the past, and they were a pain in the a*se! But others here have two, and they're fine. I've personally never had a problem with a male & female together.

Re: Female Staff
I have 2 girls and there is a big age difference as Caryll said i have to watch Milly as she is growing because she does try to get one up on lady but we are quick to nip it in the bud before it escalates. On the whole tho they get on great and Lady loves to play Mother xx

Would the dog not get frustrated being stuck in a crate while the other gets attention.

Crate and Rotate is a common way to deal with dogs not getting along (For more detailed info on Crate and Rotate, Click HERE). It's either keep them separated or rehome one, which would be a lot harder on the dog. If someone isn't willing to do all they can to keep both dogs if they become aggressive with one an other, then they should not get two dogs.
