Poor Elga
Poor Elga
My chicken Elga is very ill indeed My mum let them out yesterday morning and Elga refused to come out so she went in and got her out and to her horror Elga's right eye has gone actually gone just a hole there I have no idea whats caused this because she has no other wounds but when i looked it looks like the eye has been pushed towards her beak I then noticed she has yellow lumps on her comb and around her face....She got Fowl Pox and requires hands on my mum has been feeding soggy food and she ate and i'v syring her water. Matilda doesn't seem to have anything on her even though its highly contagious among chickens, I guess its just a waiting game now with alot of care she should be ok but for it to affect her eye so quickly and how it affected her eye, I know it causes blindness but the eye has moved very scary thought but we don't know what has caused it.

Poor Elga! My boss has chickens & one of them got fowl pox - it was treated & all the birds were vaccinated afterwards & all of them got over it. For a while, though, he was really worried that it would spread through all of them.
I believe it's a virus?

Re: Poor Elga
Yeah it is a virus but now i'm thinking twice about whether she has it. she doesn't have any lump or warts type of thing like she did yesterday but they might of been dry blood. Something has attacked her and removed her eye.
I know this is going to sound horrible but my mum is in two minds whether to go to the vets, one pound chicken verses a few hundred pound because an exotic vet would have to be called. I don't like to think any animal is in pain i know thy deal with pain differently. I don't know what to do i don't even think the vet cold offer anything anyways.

Re: Poor Elga
I blended up some veg for her yesterday and she ate it most of it and she is looking more lively today being syringing her water a few times a day and bathing her eye and she's looking more and more active i just hope she stays on this road because if she goes i'll lose Matilda as well because we will have to give her up because keeping one chicken on its own is cruel their social animals. I don't think my mum will want more its too harsh when they start dying on you.

Re: Poor Elga
I dread letting them out every morning and dread checking on her just incase she is dead same as this morning but she is still alive her eye has swollen a little more but she is standing on her own now, I syringed her some water and she pecked at a little food by herself. Its going to take a while i just she hangs on. luckily enough she is the more socialable one when it comes to humans so its not stressing her out to much when we have to handle her.

Great news Elga is out and about today back to her usual self, Cleaned her eye yesterday and it seems to of helped her great, she keeps it open now and her eye is still there just moved some how, but she's doing great eating and drinking on her own as well.
