Is it a bad idea to breed two staffs if the male is quite abit bigger? Will it cause damage to the bitch? I have done alot of research on it but can't seem to find anything about the sizes. Both staffs get on extremely well and are very friendly with each other and would be great to breed but we dont want to go ahead if its going to damage or hurt them.

Yes both healthy dogs. We have close friends and family who have had staffs and want a pup if they do breed so we know they will be going to good homes but we just dont know with the bitch being a small staff and the male being one of the largest ive seen.

The mating itself might not hurt, but my concern would be (if the male is a lot larger) that the pups may be too large for easy birthing.

Before you seriously consider breeding though, can I just ask that you look through the following page please? :)Mainly because a lot of people want to breed, but they aren't fully aware of what they're doing - especially as there are already so many staffies in rescues. The majority of these rescues were bred by people who, like you, probably didn't mean any harm and just wanted to be able to breed two nice staffies. However, most of the pups resulting from those litters often go into rescues because:

1) the breeder might not be able to find homes for them
2) the new owners realise that they can't cope with an excitable staffy pup
3) complicatons arise in the pups because the (quite expensive) health tests prior to breeding were not conducted by a vet

Thankyou for your help Smile we are deciding not to breed we dont want her to have a bad delivery and maybe harm her. There health is most important so you are right we are going to leave it to people who know best! Thanks!

Well, I admit you've pleasantly surprised me! Smile We get a lot of people coming on here wanting to breed, and most of them go ahead with it after hearing that there may be complications. You obviously have your dog's best interests at heart and I wish more owners were like you! Smile

Yes I treat my dogs like my children if theres a possibility of harming them its not going to happen it would be nice to have some puppies but id rather not take the risk. Breaks my heart seeing any dogs hurt or in rescues so Im not willing to take the risk just incase anything does go wrong. Smile

I'm so glad you've decided not to breed. I had a pup from a friend who had mum and dad(both KC registered) All looked healthy and happy. I've recently found out ruby( now 5yrs) has L2HGA and mum and dad are both carriers. My friend and I had never heard of it until few months ago. It's not enough to think cos you've seen the parents that they are healthy. Sad

ANYONE who contemplates breeding their Staffy should first look Jane's posts and learn what poor Ruby is going through.

The utmost care must be taken before mating that both Mum and Dad are free from any inheritable illnesses/disabilities, not only for the good of the breed but to prevent any puppies being born into the world who will suffer, and bring heartache upon the people who love them.
