Holly has the cat around the neck
Hi all,
The only real issue i have with Holly is she chases the cat.. barks at him and then they fight.. Archie is so gentle in nature and at first he doesnt seem to worried... but she has a nack of tripping him over and grabbing his back foot and then she jumps on him and pins him down by the throat.. yesterday i had to seperate them twice
Holly is sent out side when she does this.. she sulks and then when we let her back in she goes straight for him again... its is like having a 2 year old on crack pmsl..
any suggestions please... i dont want her taking a chunk out of him

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
My Roxy would be sooooooo jealous of Holly, simply for the fact that she wants to make friends with my cat "Tom" but he won't have it. If she gets any closer than half a metre to him, he bops her one and then chases her across the room (I know it's not funny but to see my Pup run from/scared of the cat is kind of ammusing) She too barks at the cat which drives me nuts.
Sorry I can't help with your problem but i'm sure somebody on here will have the info you need.

Sorry can't help. My cat is the boss. Loads of times I've walked into the kitchen to find the dog lying on the tiles and the cat in his bed, I have to chuck her out so Blue can have his bed back. They will cuddle up if Blue is in the bed first. If the cat is in first Blue won't dare attempt to get in.

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Sorry can't give you any advice.
I am in a similar boat, Bruno want to make friends with our cat but...... she's not having any of it, she spits, hisses, growl and gets him with her paw if he gets too near her, she basically spends her day upstairs asleep in my wardrobe or OH wardrobe comes down mid afternoon for something to eat and to go out to do her business then come back in and does all this again.
I am actually looking for a new home for her not because of Bruno but because our neighbours on the left of us have 5 cats and the 3 year old is pregnant again (3 litter i believe) but 3 of these cats are picking my cat and she always coming in with a cut eye, which we bathe each time for her. Don't want to get rid of her but i just want her to have a happy life but with the cats next door she's not getting it, we brought her before we moved here and she was really happy.
I am sure someone on can help

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
and I'm not much help either. I don't have a cat since my darling old 17 year old burmese cross was put to sleep, as we have alot of birds etc around here. Anyway Jethro had never seen a cat till he flew over to South Australia with us ( spoilt brat! ) to see my family. My mum has a cat Missy and she gets on well with all the neighbourhood dogs. So when she met Jethro she just ran up to him, rubbing and purring. He took it all in his stride, and they fell madly in love. She was even eating out his bowl.. kicked him out his bed..hahah... Anyway a year or so ago we took Jethro to someones place.. they had a cat, and Jethro ran up to the cat, flat out, expecting a welcome like Missy's, but this cat went berserk and attacked and scratched Jethro right next to his eye ball! There was blood everywhere. He was so lucky no damage done.... but now he gives cats a wide berth ( though when we go over to SA, he knows Missy is the one cat he can get close to) Anyway what I am saying is be careful, because a cat's claws can do alot of damage!! A millimetre to one side and Jethro could have easily have lost his eye.
ps pic is Jethro and Missy and Tony when we went to SA last.

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Kaos and my cat sugar are completley in love with each other but i have always has to keep my eye on her with Ty. Ty will be a bit too interested in her and she will swipe him but Ty wont back down. I have had to be a bit nastsy to Ty to be honest and just make it clear to him its not acceptable to be rough i feel bad on Ty coz he's not really being bad just interested but in the long run i would rather be a bit nasty to Ty over the cat for a while than have a dead cat lol x

Ohhh man....lol you guys are such puppy/cat lovers lol
Caryll.... this has been happening for a while.. it increased when my dad was here and it was so hot at night over the last month that we put holly out on the deck to sleep.. she was tossing and turning all night and keeping my dad awake with her restlesness...anyway now she is still sleeping out side.. which she decided she wanted to do cause she just gets up and goes out her doggy door and sleeps on her blankets.. so we put her crate back out there and she seems content.. winter may be a diff story...
anyway she is spending more time out side as i put her out when she goes mental at the ccat...... she i wagging her tail the whole time and she is having a ball.. but poor archie is really getting a tough time.
Ok i have just taken a quick video of the 2 of them at it.. usually i would have broken it up but i have to say archie being cornered it was the first time Holly retreated and not run away...
plus the first place he runs to is the dinning table which i have to say is turning my stomach that he is sitting up there.. i have to clean it before each meal
i will upload it as soon as it is done x
very cute pics by the way xxx thanks for sharing

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Poor Archie! Poor Holly too, she clearly just wants to play but just scares Archie. Hopefully Archie will get used to her and Holly will calm down as she gets older

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Does holly know the leave it command as this also really helps with Ty. Yes it is quite sweet to watch and holly obviously isnt being agressive in the slightest but it still seems to me she needs to know how far she can go with the cat ie not jumping on it lol. x

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Her tail is errect wagging but errect i find it quite obsessive, she seems curious and her curiousity isn't getting satisfied (because the cat is running away or won't play) so she is taking her frustration out on the cat hence the barking and pinning, its all to do with boundaries and you really got to stop her before her jaw muscles kick in and just over the top play and curiousity can turn very ugly, I hate to say it but curiousity killed the cat usually used for cats but in this case not. You'v definatly got to be more firm with her either by redirecting or using a leash for corrections which you can't always do obviousely.

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
Hi mel just watched your vid poor archie, but you need to take control now at the moment shes only playing with a stafford that situation can soon change.
I used to have a cat and my boy was forever coming in with blood on his nose cause he was pushin his luck.
Leave would be good as she gets stronger she will still want to play rough and if the cat chooses to retaliate then end of the cat.
Stop her now whatever teqnique she knows best

Re: Holly has the cat around the neck
I agree, you need to take control. Holly must learn that the behaviour isn't acceptable or poor Archie's gonna end up getting hurt.
Use the 'leave' command, but you must mean it. It's one of those commands that you have to be totally consistant with - if you say 'leave' then it must be an immediate 'leave', don't accept "Ok, I'll just give it a shake/sniff/lick and then I'll leave".
