scraped skin on dry grass
Hi, I was walking Louby yesterday and we took her to the park. We took 2 balls with us, one to throw first then she runs back drops that one ready for us to throw the 2nd one, and she does this for ages, loves it. But then when we were setting off to walk home, she kept laying down, which is soooo unlike her, she seems to have limitless energy. We were only throwing the balls for about 20 mins. She would then stand up, walk abit then lay down again, i was very worried by this point wondering if she had heat exhaustion. Then we got to the road and she was walking ok then. But then i noticed that at the back of her legs where her dew claws are (hers is just a pad of skin, no claw) blood was had been running down, and when i looked she had scraped the skin away from the pad, from skidding on the dry grass when chasing the balls.
Is this something that will heal itself (she is just getting walked now, no chasing for things until they have healed)? or do we need to go to the vets? (i dont want to take her if i dont need to, she has cost us a fortune lately, but will do if i have to). x

Re: scraped skin on dry grass
That's some serious ball chasing Louby!! Hope they heal well quickly.
As for whether to go to the vet, I really think it depends upon how deep/severe the sore spots are. Chiquito scraped his pad (paw) and caused an open graze which I treated with warm salty water and rawleighs salve .. it was not huge and I was happy to treat it myself.
My philosophy regarding the vet is to phone if in doubt though, so if I felt I was unsure if a vet was needed or not I would phone

Re: scraped skin on dry grass
Yes it was some serious ball throwing and catching. She loves the game, but the ground was obviously too hard & dry.
She has scraped the skin away on the pads itself, i have been bathing them in salt water, and she doesnt seem to be that bothered by them, i thought she would have been licking at them, but she isnt, although i do have cone collar to put on her if she did.
I think i shall keep an eye on them over the next couple of days, and see how she is with them. I knwwo the vet will just tell em to go in anyway (although im not suggesting for one minute that they use it as a money making scheme, although i think us on our own keeps the vets accountants very happy)!!

Re: scraped skin on dry grass
Harvey did something similar recently, but typical boy carried on regardless so we didn't notice until we got home, I washed it and smothered it in coconut oil and it all healed up in a week

If you were to take her to the vet they would most probably just give you some antibiotics and possibly an anti inflammitary. Keep an eye on it if it looks like it is infected then may need to visit the vets.

Re: scraped skin on dry grass
I'm assuming you mean the 'E' label, which is the carpal pad:
If I were you, I'd keep using the salt water to bathe the pads, particularly after walks to flush out dirt, and keep an eye on them to ensure that no infections develop. If you notice any discolouring, discharge or inflammation, a vet trip might be in order. Try to stay away from using Germoline - it's too abrasive for dogs, particularly on raw areas such as grazes and cuts.
Hope she feels better soon!

Yes it is E in the picture - i saw that when i googled what they were called.
They just like a bit of skin hanging off now, dont look as sore.
But yes if i noticed they are turning funny, i shall definitely take her x
