Romeo the murderer
danmmit! me and Romeo where walking back from the fields at 4am after i finished work so he could bathroom break and we spot a little Hedgehog making a dash over the drive of my apartment building... well Romeo saw it too... and he went for it. there was nothing i could do as when we walk the fields i dont leash him. he butchered the poor little thing. the part that guilted me the most was once i had got him to drop it i knew it was done for and it was still a little alive... but it didnt linger that long, as some of its vitals where stewn across the drive Romeo was hovering about 4 meters away from me... i knew he wanted to come back for more, but he didnt dare.
i move it into the bushes because there are some very young children living here and i didnt think that that was something they should be seeing. I was pretty annoyed at Romeo and took him inside and checked him over. he had a few spikes in him.... but no more then 6, and none of them in his mouth, just on his muzzle.... how... how did he manage to not get pricked?
now he is sitting on the floor looking all guilty, and so he should.... although i know he's just trying to appease my anger at him....little git!

Re: Romeo the murderer
You did the right thing Taryn in making sure the hedgehog didn't suffer long, and for hiding the remains away from the sight of children.
Hopefully the spikes that Romeo got in him will teach him to think again before he attacks another hedgehog. That, and your displeasure in his actions, which he seems to have taken on board.

Poor little hedgehog . Ditto what Lynda said. Be interesting to see if he does it again if the opportunity is there or if he learnt enough from your displeasure.

Re: Romeo the murderer
this is the second time. last time the poor thing survived and waddled off.... but he went for it with such sytong killing intent... he's never done that to other animals, not even others that he's killed... this was brutal
Re: Romeo the murderer
Oh Romeo you silly billy, hedgehogs are not a food group!
Glad to hear he didn't do himself any harm Taryn. RIP little hedgehog.

Naughty Romeo! Him and Skibadee are in cahoots I think. Planning a big staffy picnic and started collecting things already! Some just have that terrier instinct more than others.

Re: Romeo the murderer
Sad as it seems to us its just a natural thing for the dogs. It doesn't make them evil or vicious its just a prey drive that they cant ignore. When my two killed a fox I was so so worried about how they would be with other dogs and I called the guy I got marley from who said they know diff between prey and I shouldn't worry. He was right and a walk 30 mins later they showed no aggressive behaviour whatsoever to any dog big or small even though they were still hyped up. So far they have killed a fox, 4 squirrels (one in front of a family very embarasing) dug out a mole and killed that and marley was running around with a hedgehog in his mouth which I thankfully got out alive. Its a fact of life they are all hunter killers deep down and will go after prey if they are that way inclined, and thats any dog capable of that. Own a jrt, border collie or gsd and youll get the same outcome. Dogs will be dogs

Re: Romeo the murderer
Ha ha Moo is way into double figures on the squirrel front, but when I had a hamster I could quite happily leave them together running about, its cause the hamster smelt of home not prey.....prey is fair game!

Re: Romeo the murderer
Aww poor little hedgehog! Hopefully the spikes in his muzzle will teach him a lesson and he won't go after one next time! I'm glad Romeo wasn't hurt though! Try not to be too mad at him as instinct probably took over and he didn't realize he was being a bad boy!
