what is it cob roll bun or other

 i went Sheffield an few time well it was it was place between Sheffield and Rotherham i can't remember what it was call always remember this moment i went in chip shop wanting an fish cake cob  the worker didn't know what i was talking about

Noody has mentioned Barms yet ??? When I was 19 and new to the world , staying in Manchistah went into the chippy and asked for a bread bun with me chips and they looked at me like I was gone out    

Eventually they realised I needed a barm cake , me ...... no .......... not want anything sweet I will get chocolate rom next door if I want it

See a bun is a bun not cakey at all , unless of course you asked for a currant bun or a hot cross bun , a barm cake should be cakey but that is deceiving as it is actually a bun . A roll ................... well where I come from they normally are pastry on the outside  with a sausage in the middle

And the ultimate is if I am at work in Luton and one of the girls asks me if I want a roll at dinnertime    ..................

Roll will probably win because there are more of you than us because you are the only people that can afford to live there , one day we will introduce the uneducated to the love of a chip buttie , cheese bun and if you really must then a ham salad barm

Tell you what though , you could proably travel the whole of England , Scotland , Ireland and Wales and I bet a Pitta Bread is still a Pitta Bread , that's a sign of acceptance of international culture

Setting aside regional variations like barms and cobs etc , all very lovely in their ways -

A roll is oval

A bun is round

I will accept a bun is round and may possibly accept that a roll might be oval , mainly being that I could not afford a barbecue before I moved to staffordshire so never went shopping for finger buns up north so can't really comment , though back to the cake thing we used to have something like a finger roll with icing on the top as kids and that was an iced finger bun  

Janey, you are very passionate about bread products!

Just don't blame me if you go into a baker's/teashop/whatever and order a roll and you get a torpedo-shaped object when you wanted a round BUN!  

(We're not going to fall out about bread are we?!)

The British are a very bready nation. We might all call a loaf a loaf but regional variations in the names given to smaller bread rolls may confuse visitors. And, to be honest, some of us.

We also have a confusing, but often charming, array of words for the bread roll. Visitors who travel round different regions of Britain may find that a visit to an independent local bakery turns into a history/regional cookery lesson.

Many regions have very specific names for the simple little roll and the word you use to describe it can show where you come from.

Where I come from, a roll is something you get in posh restaurants or it is a bun masquerading as a small sandwich. Then it is called a filled roll.

This spreads right across the nation. Rolls, depending on their size and area of origin, can be barm cakes and oven bottoms (Lancashire), cobs (East Midlands), bread cakes (Yorkshire), blaa (Ireland), stotties (North East), bannocks and butteries (Scotland), nudgers and bin lids (Merseyside) and batches (Shropshire). Bap is commonly used all over Britain; confusingly, it also describes lots of different types of bread.

Even more confusingly, each region may have a range of products with different names. So, if you ask for a nudger in Liverpool but point at a bin lid, you may look slightly stupid. Asking for a teacake in most of the country will get you a sweet bread with raisins and spices in it. Ask in some small Yorkshire bakeries and you’ll get a plain bread roll.
