Is this play too rough?
Hi we have had Daisy now 3 whole days (she is 8 weeks old) and when she is sleeping our 9 month old Staffy Belle cuddles up to her and they sleep together which is lovely.
However when they are awake Belle constantly nudges Daisy and mouths her and pushes her over and has even pulled her by her ears! which then leads to Daisy biting Belles face, cheeks, tail and anything else she can get hold off! Poor Belle but then it is Belle antagonising Daisy to the point of her biting back!
This is the first time we've had 2 young dogs so not sure if this play is normal? I'm sure if the pup hurt Belle she would let her know about it ( which hasn't happened yet), and I know Staffys are a tough sturdy breed and do play rough but just need a little reassurance they're are getting along and this is all normal?
Thanks Karen, Belle and Daisy xxx

Aww thank you so much for you're reply Ella, I was beginning to think they weren't getting along so glad to hear its normal and if the pup gets too much with the biting I put them in time out for a bit to calm them down xxx

Re: Is this play too rough?
Sounds normal to me too Just keep an eye and separate them if it gets a bit much, but mostly I'd say let them get on with it!

Yer don't worry play fighting and 'fighting' are very different, just keep an eye on their body language
My 2 literally throw the other about and they like to pin the other and play as rough as it comes

Re: Is this play too rough?
Also sounds normal to me, though never had 2 together. I am only going by Vinnies play with his best girl buddy and its very rough, almost to the point of people thinking they are fighting. Hence Vin is nearly 2 now so I think defo a staffy thing.

Re: Is this play too rough?
This is how my 2 play & when it was happening at first I was a nervous wreck but my partner reassured me that its completely normal. I just let them get on with it now as they seem happy enough. Haney doesn't even flinch when Kai is hanging off his lip. They can be very entertaining but if it becomes too much, I just make them stop then they snooze... ready to do it all again when they wake x

Re: Is this play too rough?
What a lovely photo - Belle is definitely loving Daisy!
Don't worry Karen, as everyone has said they are enjoying each others' company and playing together. Just keep a weather eye on them as Daisy is still so tiny, but I'm sure neither means the other any harm.
Gorgeous dogs

What gorgeous doggies, that pic is so adorable! They sure do look like besties.
Staffy's do like to play rough - it's likely they'll nick each other and won't even realise. As others said step in when you think it's a bit one sided or they've had enough but need a 'grown up' to end it.
Need more pics of these two together please

Re: Is this play too rough?
Very normal staffies play really rough! If one hurts the other or play gets too rough one will give a warning and let the other know! However you should supervise and watch their body language just to be on the safe side!

Re: Is this play too rough?
Thanks guys, I do give them time out if it gets too much and poor Belle has a lot of marks now on her jowls where Daisy has bitten her so much! But then Belle does start the play with biting and keeps going back for more and more?!
It's like they are in a world of their own when i say no and go completely deaf so I separate them if they don't listen, and it doesn't seem to be hurting Belle as she never turns nasty or cries and always comes back for more lol.
Is there anything I can put on her bites to help them a bit?

Re: Is this play too rough?
You could rub a bit of Sudocreme into Belle's nip marks if they look raw.

Re: Is this play too rough?
Thanks Lynda her jowls just look a little marked with tiny scabs but if they look sore or too raw ill put some on.
Can I just ask another question please? Today Belle has been really full on with the mouthing, pushing and tugging and barking at Daisy! And so Daisy has really gone back at her with her biting and looking quite nasty and showing her little teeth and growling!
I've separated them when I think it's got too much and put the pup in the kitchen and Belle in the front room! but to do that I have to psychically hold them apart as they don't seem to listen when I shout no or enough! And once apart they cry and make whimpering noises.
Can some one help please as I know Belle isn't aggressive at all and I wouldn't imagine an 8 week pup is either and as you can see in the pics when it comes to food or sleep time they are fine together.
Thank you Karen, Belle and Daisy xxx

Re: Is this play too rough?
They are both still puppies and full of play. Even Belle is still a puppy and I'd bet she is overjoyed to have a fulltime playmate she can rough and tumble with. I would also hazard a guess that Daisy is equally glad to have a fulltime playmate, and that her growling etc is just puppy play.
Having said this, I have had no experience of having two dogs together, never mind puppies, so I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to advise you better.

Re: Is this play too rough?
just to let you no that our beau[15 months] and phoebe[10 weeks] are the exact same.. looks very rough though and we are always wondering if we have let it go to far but like some others have said just keep an eye.. we don't let them sleep together though they have separate beds so that when it goes to far they calm down in their own space where the no they will not be pestard by the other we do believe that they should no that if they want they can have a break..we don't cage our dogs so they are actually[if not sleeping, eating, or calming down time] together all the time..
