3 legged dog help
Hi all, some of you may remember that a couple of months ago we adopted Sophie from our local pound, she is a lively collie cross, though we feel she is actually a lurcher. She is coming on brilliantly by the way.
Anyway, for various reasons we feel that she would benefit from the company of another dog so are considering getting another rescue (yes I know, we're ruddy mad (or stupid!)). We have seen a lovely rescued young lurcher that is about to undergo a front leg amputation, as a result of a birth defect that has been left untreated.
Does anyone have any real experience of three legged dogs and how they cope? Would he be able to cope with Sophie - who can be a bit full on. Would he be able to keep up and manage longish walks at a reasonable speed??
When I was a kid there used to be a 3 legged dog in my area that plodded around for literally miles. But thats my only experience.
Any help or opinions gratefully recieved.
Kind regards to all
Woody

Re: 3 legged dog help
No personal experience but there is a 3 legged greyhound cross I come across on 1 particular walk quite regular think she is about 5 ish and she seems to cope with reasonable pace , though she wouldn't be haring it round the field . Why don't you have a chat with the rescue and see what their feelings are on the subject

Re: 3 legged dog help
How strange.
I was talking to a woman in the vets on Monday who has a three-legged greyhound - lost a front leg in an accident.
I actually asked her if the dog was frustrated (the dog being an ex-racer) and she said it was still ridiculously quick and she could think of no negatives at all - she said it was unbounded in terms of its ability to manage a lengthy walk with her (she was probably in her 50s and said she walked the dogs a lot each day).
Reckoned the dog was playful, enjoying life and having no problems at all.
I also owned a collie with three legs years ago - but that was a rear amputee. It did nothing to slow him down or prevent him trying to leap the fence.

Re: 3 legged dog help
Dogs cope excellently with three legs. After the initial balance balance problems (it can take a few days to properly get their balance right) they don't even seem to notice!

Re: 3 legged dog help
I've met a few 3 legged dogs and they have adapted well. You need to be careful you don't over feed them just so they don't have extra weight to put pressure on their legs.
