Is it normal to be so worried?
My poor boy is going in for surgery tomorrow and I'm so worried about him. Just hate the thought of him going under anaesthetic again. It scares me.
The thing is he had the same surgery last year (cruciate ligament) on his other leg so I know what to expect but and altho I was obviously worried I'm absolutely sick with worry this time. I just want it over with n my boy home again.
I'm so bad I keep getting upset as I couldn't bare anything to happen to him and I keep looking at him this eve knowing he doesn't know what's coming tomorrow n feeling so bad

Awww poor boy, at least you know what to expect this time around. Try to keep yourself cheerful (I know easier said than done) he will be picking up on your anxiety. Is the same surgeon doing the op this time ?

no you are 100% normal, its a feeling we all go through. when my boy had his furrry plums off last year i was pacing the house and my ex dragged me out on a walk with laska. i didnt calm down until the vet called me to say "please pick him up he's howling the place down" on which at getting him home he collapsed and slept for 8 hours straight. she herself has had her boy go through two cruciate ops in less than 8 months (youve been there you know what that involves) so no you are normal and my heart goes out to you and wish you and the dog the very best.

Do try not to worry Lisa - easier said than done I know. At least you know what to expect this time, and you know that Dizzy will benefit fro the op.

Thanks Nathan. Yes I will be pacing tomorrow too for sure after I drop him off (blubbering no doubt lol) until the vet calls. I'm leaving work early to pick him up n then have Weds off to look after him n give him lots of TLC as it is so sore swollen n raw the first few days.
Yes I know what's coming as literally it's a year to the day he had his first leg done. So it's 8 wks of cage rest lead walks in the garden for 'comfort' breaks n a slow build up of short walks til we get the all clear X-rays. He is sure gonna miss his beloved ball n daily fetching as its his fave thing
Thank you for your good wishes so much appreciated! X

Thanks Lynda. That's what I keep telling myself. At least next year we will get the whole summer to enjoy n I won't have to be worried about another leg going as he will have had both done.
Just want tomorrow over.

Re: Is it normal to be so worried?
Because they don't know what's coming, they don't worry about it.
Little sleep, wake up, what was that all about, back to business....
Of course, that doesn't stop us as owners worrying, but anaesthetic and operation procedure have taken huge positive steps forward in the last few years.
And on the bright side, the surgery is to improve the quality of his life, so it has benefit.
Easier said than done, but don't worry.

Very true!! I know we think too human for them but they certainly know how to play the "feel sorry for me" card don't they?
Yes I have to keep trying to focus on the positive as in the long term he isn't going to have anymore problems n he can chase his ball to his heart's content

Atta girl Lisa.
Tomorrow will soon be over, and then you can start paving the way towards a fitter Dizzy.
I won't pretend that the recuperation period won't be hard work, and you'll know that better than me. But you've done it before and you can do it again !

CaraElizabeth wrote:I worry so much about Gwen sometimes I drive myself crazy! It is totally normal:)
Thanks Cara
Well he is now at the vets and I'm a complete mess. The vet must have thought I was a right muppet lol!!
I just feel so bad as he was shaking like a leaf n looking at me as if to say "please take me home mum I don'yt like it here"
Now just the painful wait until I hear from the vet to say its all over n he's ok. Have got everything crossed!!
The surgeon did say it was a little more difficult this time as the ligament hasn't actually ruptured like it did on his other leg (only a partial tear but in time would lead to a full rupture which is why he is having the surgery now which will also reduce the onset of arthritis in that leg too) n he didn't know whether to remove it or leave it in place along with the implant that supports the joint n acts like the ligament. He said Staffies legs are a bit more difficult coz their legs are so muscly compared to most other dogs. He said if it he leaves it intact it could lead to further discomfort in the future n possibly further less invasive surgery.
I really hope he doesn't. I don't think I can go thru this again

Awwww thanks Nathan I sure will give him an extra hug from you guys :)He had a good night and was fairly settled. I still think he's wondering what happened to his leg poor boy
He won't put the leg down as yet whereas with the first cruciate he was weight bearing on it from when I picked him up from the vets. I think coz last time the cruciate actually ruptured before the op so he was on pain relief for 3 wks before the op. Whereas this time the ligament was only partially torn so he was walking around just fine n only showed signs of discomfort after a long walk or run with his ball. Plus the vet removed the cruciate yest so I am guessing it feels extra painful like when his first ruptured.
Well we have a long way to go n this is just day one. He's pretty chilled today n lapping up all the love n cuddles. He's currently laying on my lap right now giving me the occasional look saying "poor me... Please give me more kisses n cuddles" bless him
Hugs to your hounds too n thanks for caring

Re: Is it normal to be so worried?
Hey everyone, just a quick update since my post back at the end of July.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to you all once again for all the support and advice you gave at the time when my boy had his cruciate ligament op. I am delighted to say we made it thru the 8 weeks, albeit with a minor set back, but thankfully all is ok and we are back enjoying some gentle walks again.
Must say it is a huge relief not to have to walk around the house/garden with him on a lead constantly and he was delighted to lose the cage which he had to be in when we were all out (although in some ways I think he quite like his little den).
It will be another good month or two before we can fully lift all restrictions and he can have his beloved ball again, but we are well on the road to full recovery now
We will certainly look forward to next summer when (fingers crossed) there will be no 2 month surgery recovery periods which meant we missed most of the lovely summer walks this year and last!
YIPEEEE!!
Love me n Dizzy dawg xx
