Advice please
I've heard a lot about raw feeding lately, my mum has been doing it with her 3, collie, Yorkie and bichion, Millie the collie had collie nose and she was looking at ways if preventing this, within 6 weeks it has almost cleared. I'm also thinking of going down this route but with Hugos red meat intolerance I'm hoping he will be ok. I feel so guilty when just putting his dog biscuits in his bowl, I'm sure he would love a nice juicy bone. If any one has any advice, it's very much appreciated xx

Re: Advice please
Today has been very interesting, I have been to see a nutricianist for Hugo, firstly I was advised by someone at pets at home to put Hugo on beta sensitive which states it is salmon and potato.. 4% salmon, the rest most probably being beef! So .. On this I have decided to go raw. I've got salmon and chicken to start, oh and some poochie icecream x

Re: Advice please
I would always advice doing as much reading as you can before starting a raw diet, and starting with chicken ONLY. Read these to give you some idea

I was advised to give him salmon and fish first because I know he is ok on that, then introduce chicken then use the chicken as main food, then start introducing small amounts of lamb, etc ?
Thank you for the links x

Re: Advice please
chicken as most of his diet isn't a great idea he needs the biggest variety as possible to get all the different nutrients the different meat has.
Most of the time it's recommended to follow this rough guide
chicken
turkey
tripe
lamb
fish
pork
beef
offal
you add the new meat in one at a time in 1-2 week intervals once you get solid stools

What do you think of the natural instincts range? I've given him the salmon with chicken to start x

Re: Advice please
Is that mince? I'm not keen on it.
Remember that a dog needs to be able to chew/rip meat off the bone (for healthy teeth) and then eat the bone for calcium & other minerals.
Bones also help to satisfy a dog's natural gnawing instincts.

Re: Advice please
Yeah I'm hoping for this just to be the start of introducing the raw, I'm going to put chunks of raw fish in tonight's feed then put raw chicken in tomorrow's feed to get him used to having to rip up his own food, once I know he is ok I'm going to put a chicken bone in. I am worrying due to hugos so called red meat intolerance, so I am trying to do it very gradually so I know what upsets his tum and what doesn't if that makes sense x

Re: Advice please
Can be very worrying when you start feeding raw but don't worry he will know how to tackle the chunks. I was do as Ella has suggested and start with chicken then introduce the different meats in the order she has put. That way you will learn what meats don't agree. Like Ella said only move on once Hugo has firm stools. If he continues to have the runs then there is a good chance that meat isn't for him

Re: Advice please
Thank you for the help but I need a little more..
Hugo's stools have been solid, but he keeps vomiting.. I've been told to let him clean up after himself but is this normal for him to keep bringing small amounts back up??

yep throwing up is very normal when first starting on raw, it's very normal for them to bring bits of bone back up as their stomach isn't used to digesting them fully yet.
If he will re-eat it then do let him!

Re: Advice please
He has been re-eating, tonight is going to be the first night giving him a chicken leg.. This should be fun.

Re: Advice please
Little update..
Hugos raw feeding is going really well..
He's had, fish, chicken inc bones, turkey and the tripe is going down a treat with very little tummy upset, now being firm stools
The next thing on my list is lamb.. This is where I think I will know hugos intolerance, if its just dried red meat or just red meat all together.
Wish us luck for tomorrow's feed x

Re: Advice please
I was thinking of trying a little lamb mince, or do you suggest actual lamb pieces?

Re: Advice please
As you are testing to see if he is intolerant or not, it doesn't really matter. Normally i'd always recommend whole pieces for them to chew but you can move on to that later

Re: Advice please
I think I will try mince this week, then next week try with lamb pieces and do the pieces bigger as the week progresses, I think it's going to have to be a slow process but it will defo be worth it!!
Thank you, I really do appreciate it x

Re: Advice please
Take care with mince - if it's from the butchers/supermarket it isn't so bad, but if it's the frozen pet mince you don't always know what's gone into it!

Re: Advice please
I bought lamb mince from the supermarket
When I first went to see the nutritionist they told me that beta sensitive (salmon and potato) was only 14% fish, the rest being meat dereditives. I was gutted that I'd been feeding this to Hugo not actually knowing what was in it.
I really do appreciate the help
