should I continue with puppy nursery?
I've been taking my 11 week puppy to a puppy nursery for a couple of weeks now to get her used to mixing with other dogs and to learn bite inhibition.....she plays really rough and always ends up with scratches on her. She has started growling at me and the children more often since she's been going and has also started snapping more. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about whether I should continue taking her or not as I don't know if it's helping her

Re: should I continue with puppy nursery?
I would probably carry on with the puppy classes as she is in a group with others amongst trained professionals who should be in control of all the dogs there.
What do the trainers there say about her? Have you heard of any negative comments from other dog owners there with regard to the trainers credentials?
What does your gut say about the place, if you have any doubts then look elsewhere for puppy classes.

Re: should I continue with puppy nursery?
What exactly goes on there? Really, they shouldn't be allowed to go in for a free-for-all! The play & socialisation should be structured.

Do you think you would be allowed to go along to observe? If the pups are just allowed to play wherever and whenever with each other, there's no structure and bite inhibition won't be improved.

Thank you for your replies
I stay with her.....it's on for 30 minutes, twice a week......it is a bit of a free for all they just run around. It looks to me like they are all fighting but the person running it says it's play. If a puppy gets too rough they are taken away for a couple of minutes. Bessie is no worse or better than the others there but I'm worried that the behaviour she's allowed to do there is being brought home. When I expressed my concerns the woman who ran it said I was best to keep bringing her as I didn't want a nippy dog

Re: should I continue with puppy nursery?
I'd find somewhere else, to be honest. Free play is all very well, but there should be a structure to it, and it sounds like there's none!
All she'll be learning there is how to get thoroughly over excited & completely over tired!

The trouble is, puppies won't teach themselves not to play bite. It's how they play with each other naturally, so if they're allowed to just run around and play however they like, they'll just keep nipping.
And I think she probably told you to stick with it because she doesn't want to lose a customer.

Re: should I continue with puppy nursery?
haha I thought that myself, it was a one off payment for puppy classes but then I'd said I was going to start the training in a couple of weeks which was £10 a session.
I think I will start to look elsewhere because she's ready to go for walks at the end of the week and I don't want her diving on dogs the way she does there.
Thank you for your help and advice everyone x
