Bed Rest Empty Bed Rest

Post by jamesbeil Fri Jul 05 2013, 07:24

Tyson got hit by a car yesterday - thank goodness, he's only got soft tissue damage to his left hind leg & he's putting a brave face on it, but the vet says he's on bed rest for the next few weeks. He's going back to the vets in two weeks for another check-up, but until then he's on strict bed-rest, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice for keeping him occupied?

Ow no poor Tyson!

You could give him a raw bone, stuffed kong, you could still play with his toys lying down gently and not forgetting lots and lots of cuddles and attention Smile

Awww poor Tyson, did the car driver stop ??

Bed rest, that's a tricky one do you have some games you could play around the house, like hidding things in a blanket, lots of things for him to sniff out will tire his mind out and make him sleep.

Tiger was on 4 weeks bed rest, that's when we got her a crate, put a stag bar and some other toys in there and left her to it, we didn't close the door unless we were going out or it was bedtime and now she loves it.

You never know, you might get lucky and he'll want to just sleep for the few days Tongues

Oh my goodness! Poor Tyson, how terrible! Frozen kong would be great, you could also hide some treats around the house and have him find them, stag bar, we even play tag with Gwen.. any kind of mental stimulation to tire him out! I hope he has a quick recovery!

Tyson was actually on the way to our local park when it happened - every day he goes walking with the neighbors' staffy, and he just pulled into the road and before I could yank him back far enough he got bowled straight over. The driver did stop, poor old couple couldn't apologize enough, bless their hearts.

I'm just glad he's okay; another foot or half a second later and he could have been killed! Crying or Very sad

The neighbor popped around today and brought Tyson some treats, and we're glad all around that he's still in one piece. Not sure how he's going to be when he gets back on the street, poor lad. Rizzy (neighbor's dog) was missing him terribly when I went over, he's going to be without a playmate for a while.

It is very lucky that Tyson wasn't any closer to that car the poor little boy! It's also good the people in the car were so sympathetic, its a situation that could have been so much worse but luckily it wasn't! Im glad to hear Tyson is okay Smile Hope he gets much better quick and hopefully he will be okay back on his walks once he is rested Smile Keep up updated!

Bed Rest Empty Re: Bed Rest

Post by jamesbeil Fri Jul 19 2013, 21:06

Not good news.

Tyson's not seemed to have healed as much as the vet would have hoped, the muscle's really starting to waste away, there's a large lump in his leg, and they think that the first x-ray might have missed something with the bones. The osteo-chap is calling on Tuesday, but right now I'm worried that this might end up giving Tyson a permanent problem.

Worst-case scenario, it's some awful cancer and the leg will have to come off ;_;

Hope it turns out to be something completely innocent, but I'm really worried right now. Does anyone know of any hydrotherapy places in Northamptonshire so I can at least get him a little exercise?

Post by jamesbeil Thu Jul 25 2013, 00:04

Okay, Tyson's sleeping over at the hospital and is getting x-rayed tomorrow, after which the vets will decide the next course of action. The orthopaedic doctor thinks that a collateral ligament in his knee was torn in the accident, and since then there's been a lot of scar tissue built up around the injury.

At the moment, he thinks that the most likely course of action would be to excise the tissue and put some pins in his leg, but that'll have to wait until the results come back. Just glad we've got insurance - it only covers up to £4000, but I've had a chat with the rest of the family and we've agreed that as long as Tyson is happy, we'll find the money.

I'll give you another update when we learn anything more. Thanks for all the support Smile

Bed Rest Empty Re: Bed Rest

Post by jamesbeil Thu Jul 25 2013, 17:05

Well he's finally back, and we now know what happened.

His left fibia was sheared clean off it's moorings and is at an odd angle, and the growth plate in his tibia near the joint fractured, all the way along the bone. Since that wasn't picked up first time around, it's now healed up and his leg is stuck at a funny angle. We're going back again in two weeks, after which he'll start some hydro, but the long story short is that there's nothing that'll hurt him! Big Grin

His leg is going to be at an odd angle for the rest of his life, but other than that he should be perfectly happy & healthy - as long as he's not in pain I couldn't care what his leg looks like!

Thanks again for all the messages, I've given him hugs from everyone!

Post by Guest Thu Jul 25 2013, 19:25

Well that was bad and good news James.

Poor Tyson - I hate to moan about a vet but how on earth did they miss this colossal damage on the first x-rays?

The good news is of course that Tyson is not in pain any more - I do hope the hydrotherapy helps him regain full mobility and that as Tyson grows, matures and strengthens that the odd angle of his leg becomes less odd over time.

All best wishes, good luck and Bed Rest 3198918699 to both of you.

Lynda wrote:Poor Tyson - I hate to moan about a vet but how on earth did they miss this colossal damage on the first x-rays?

The first X-rays were only general ones, aimed at making sure there wasn't a huge break in his pelvis or something similar, and I don't think the vets at Northampton Road had a digital x-ray machine, which is what the osteopath was using.

The fracture on the growth plate was hard enough to see with the digital x-ray, and on the lateral view (which is what I think the first x-rays were) it was impossible to see the fibia. The osteopath did say that it is an incredibly rare injury, since usually dogs break either their femur or the tibia, so it's not unreasonable for them to have missed it - he was under aneasthetic during the first x-ray so Tyson couldn't have complained much, and he's never really been one for moaning - sometimes, Staffies are just too tough for their own good!

At the moment, we're not sure which way the leg will grow; it's definitely going to be wonky, but the osteopath says that it will either average out over time and it'll only be a bit off, or it might hyperextend, in which case surgery would be on the table. D:

I hope that your vets will foot the bill for any further treatment, seeing as they missed the original injury.

I'm sorry, maybe it was hard to spot, but spot it they should have! They're vets!angry

Okay James, thanks. You went to a specialist which is good (hooray for insurance eh) and you are obviously continuing to get the best care for Tyson.

Hopefully Tyson's leg will improve with time and treatment - he's young yet and Mother Nature can and does work miracles.

Nothing to be compared with legs of course, but I'll just mention that a few years I broke my index finger and it set itself wonky. I resigned myself that I would always look as if I was beckoning someone "come here"! Now it's straight and strong and good as new - sh1t happens but so do good things.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you and Tyson are progressing Bed Rest 3198918699

Lots of love to Tyson - as Lynda says time sometimes makes things come right. I smashed my thumb a few years ago and they said it would always be a bit weak despite having it pinned. Now, I can't tell any difference. Big hug to Tyson :-)

Poor Tyson and you..I'm sure this must have been very scary for you both. I can't believe the vet missed that the first time, and I agree he should cover the bill for anything else that needs to be done. Great news that it seems like Tyson is going to recovery from this and still have a wonderful happy life. He is lucky to have such a caring owner. Please keep us updated on his progress!
