Help put my mind at rest - new staffy x
Hi there,
At the weekend, after a lot of looking, we got a family puppy. He was advertised as a staffy x american bulldog. We saw both parents at the time. I am a first time dog owner, and wanted a staffy related dog as they are good with children, but while researching the breed, I found a lot of info regarding the Dangerous Dogs Act, and "pit bull type" dogs being seized and the owners fined. As a responsible adult, I wondered if any of you experienced owners could look at the photos below to reassure me that my new pet is not like these dogs. I really don't see any resemblence, but I'm a worrier!!
Firstly, this is the pup, Bailey. He is lovely, amazingly well tempered and nearly toilet trained. He shows no sign of agression/biting etc:
The next 3 pictures or of his dad, at various ages:
And this is his mum:
From my untrained eye, the both look the same "cross" to me. They both have fantastic temprements etc.
What do you all think?? Am i worrying for nothing??
Thanks so much, the site is really great.

I don't think there is anything to worry about there, they defiantly look like they have American Bulldog in them.

I agree, both look quite AM bulldogish,I don't think anyone will suspect otherwise, especially if you have no problems with biting or anything!

Lovely dogs (parents)!! I certainly wouldn't worry at all. Bailey is stunning (I haven't a clue on AM Bulldogs) but he very much resembles a Stafford. Try not to worry about the dda, its going through (or trying to) get changed, I don't know the ins and outs but its not as clear cut as you may think. As Steve said as long as he has a proper upbringing then he will be an amazing addition to your family!

Bailey is sooooo cute. He looks very much like a staff and not like a pit so don't worry. His mum is absolutely stunning too!

Gorg pup! Its good you have pictures of the parents as you can see roughly how your pup is going to look like when older, Dad is lovely. I had people stop me and say my red staffie looked like she had lab in her! Its difficult at a young age to tell unless you have seen both parents. But you can defo see AM bull in yours.

Welcome to the forum!
Like the other's, I'd say both parents are Am Bulldog crosses, probably with stafford. Neither look anything like a pitbull, so I doubt that Bailey will either (he's gorgeous, by the way!). Just make sure you socialise him well & train him to be a good citizen & you'll have no problems.
There are two American Bulldogs near me, by the way, and both have beautiful temperaments.

Hi all. Thank you all so much for the replies so far - I am feeling a lot better after reading your comments. I had a good feeling that he was not pit bull type but like I said earlier, I worry a lot, even more so now I am falling for him! I hope he turns out like his dad, I think he is awesome! (saw a photo of his dad as a pup, he is the spit of him!)
Thanks again

Re: Help put my mind at rest - new staffy x
Both parents seem to be a blend of staffordshire bull and american bulldog, the mother looks more staffyish. But I would chance on saying they definately dont have pit in them, he looks like a lovely puppy. Looking at mum and dad hes going to be a big boy!
And besides as others have said its the owner that makes any dog what it is or isn't. You seem responsible and are already doing well with training, well done!! Please feel free to ask any more questions you might have, everyones very friendly

Re: Help put my mind at rest - new staffy x
Thanks again for all the replies - so the unanimous decision is that he is definitely isn't anything like a pit, which I am so glad to hear from you all. I have looked at so many pit "type" dogs over the last few days on the internet and I have been hard pushed to find anything similar at all between them and these dogs, but I wanted the opinion of people who know about these things!
My partner's parents have a lovely boxer (they have always had boxers) and they both think he looks a bit boxer'ish, as did the vet who fitted his microchip. In any case, I am glad I got the photos of the parents as it really helps to guess at what he is going to turn out like. Both parents were BIG, but also clumsy and very friendly. I am going to take him to socialisation classes as soon as he is a few days past his next vaccinations as I really want to be responsible and make him a dog to be proud of.
My partner has had dogs all her life and she seems to know what she is doing but I am still a little shellshocked about it all, I am reading a lot about how to be alpha etc and am determined to make sure he is a happy, relaxed and loving dog.
Very impressed with the warm welcome I have received here, I will definitely not be scared to ask any questions as and when they come up!
Thanks again
Grahame

Re: Help put my mind at rest - new staffy x
I can see boxer in the shape of his face, and his dad has long limbs like a boxer and quite a square jaw. Perhaps dad is a boxer/am bulldog/staff mix?
(True Blaze I did skip about a page of this topic before posting, now going back over it I can see where the discussion was focused!)
Still don't think hes very typey at the mo and neither are his parents, I think hes going to be bigger and leaner than a staff or pb cross would be. But then we could argue about what type is til the cows come home thats the problem with BSL, hopefully the new bill that is being discussed should target individual dangerous dogs rather than breeds.

Re: Help put my mind at rest - new staffy x
Hi everyone,
Old topic, but I thought I would update with a photo of Bailey as of today, at 9 months old. He has filled out a lot of late, but doesn't seem to be getting any taller/longer. I can definitely see boxer in him now. He is the sweetest most loving pet I have ever had. He never growls at anything and always does as he is told. My youngest likes to sit on his back while watching the TV and he doesn't seem to care at all What do you think??
