I agree Steve, it doesn't seem to be getting any better, luckily we've only got 5 years left on our mortgage, and don't have credit cards

Its hard enough as it is now, I cant and don't want to imagine how hard it will be later on.

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
Id never have a credit card anyway, i HATE owing money and it really stresses me out. I have an overdraft which i live in, but it is 0% interest so doesn't really matter! My uni fees are getting to a ridiculous cost, but i don't pay them until i get a job of over 16k and i won't ever get one soon so can't see me ever paying it!

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
I am a master of credit card control paid religiously and cleared every month as I have been there , done that , and bought the T shirt having many sleepless nights. I'm not rich , we can afford mortgage , bills and food without getting into debt for it and if there's money left then a few beers and a cheap holiday with the dogs. Got some cash saved up for my daughters future and also my Grandson so I'm happy. If we have a depression my job would probably be 1 of the first to go in the company as I am there to take all the organisational pressure off the sales department so they can work harder , if the sales aren't there it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work it out does it But fortunately I still have my trade and experience to fall back on if times do get hard . These days its more about overstringing the bow to get more security.)

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
Only people that know about this at the minute is my OH and daughter. Within the next week or so, as long as the contract is finalised, I will be working in Abu Dhabi doing constructive cosmetics. My old boss is flying out this evening to hopefully finalise everything and within a matter of days I should be out there. I've never wanted something so badly in my life. So all being well, "Great Britain" can stick the depression well and truly where the sun don't shine. If it all goes Pete Tongue, then ill cope with what I earn now, hopefully!!!

When I was finishing up college at the end of my apprenticeship I almost did it , I worked with a guy in our company who was a temp and having a 6 month break from Saudi , he would be out there most of the time as chargehand for a team of Electricians and offered me an opportunity . I declined as I was just finishin up and had only been married or a year , marriage lasted 4 years of together (my fault ) wished I had though more about it
So good luck mate and hope it all works well for you , but I don't envy you having the memory of the look on Lolas face haunting you as she watches you pack your bags and walk out the door if my 2 are anything to go by when I stop out for just a night

Knowing how much better off we would be with no financial worries whatsoever is what motivates me to want to do it. Just gonna have to be a case of FaceTime/Skype etc a few hours a day.

From what I gather mate it's mostly hotels and like that serve alcohol. Having said that, being a "westerner", some places don't really care. Think the average price for a pint is about £3.50

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
Well you HAVE cheered me up this evening Steve! I'm not political (also I'm thick) so don't understand world economy etc. But the prospect of10/15 years of fixed pension and rising prices isn't thrilling - I'll be at least 74 before things start looking up, STILL with a dependent son and hopefully a dependent dog. At least I don't have a credit card!
Wishing you all the best Matty with your new venture - grab all you can whilst the grabbing's good!

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
Thanks for the apology Steve, but there was no need. I know you are much more politically aware than I am, and it takes someone like you to shake me out of my Pollyanna mindset and realise that I must cut back on the pleasures in life (like smoking and drinking ) to survive the hard years ahead.
But here's a thought - if everyone stopped smoking and drinking tomorrow, like we're always being nagged to do by the Government - what would they do without the squillions of £s we pay in exhorbitant tax on our pitiful pleasures? Would it result in an even worse depression?

I'm not sure the revenue would be anywhere near as high as it used to be Lynda , a lot of us hardened smokers have moved on to roll ups , and even then probably like me sourcing from overseas as the cheaper option. As for drinking I bet a lot of it is done indoors now via supermarket supplies since the government made their stupid stupid laws.
Tough choice for me , stop in 24 cans for £15 and do what I want in my own house which can include sitting in the little room upstairs and having a smoke , or go out pay £3.50-£4 a pint , stand outside in the cold and rain to have a smoke and probably meet some pumped up youth thats hammered on 3 pints and wants to fight you

Re: dont over spend for the next 10/15 years
Well me and the OH have never had a CC and the only debt i have is my student overdraft from when i was at uni, but i have never been over it, or paid any interest. I also pay £50 off every month without fail and it's the first thing i pay when i get paid, so it's nearly paid off now but thats it

Good luck Matty with your overseas venture and don't worry, I shan't be bringing England (or even myself) to Abu Dhabi!

Way to go Ella. I don't have a CC either, because I know how terribly easy it is to overspend on it.

Definitely agree with you both on this but I will only spend the money we have as I am 100% sure I will never ever let myself get back into debt again . We do gout out but its occasionally . Though I do feel quite guilty at times because my job gives me personally a bit more in life

.. for the last couple of weeks I've been seriously thinking about part-exing the Jeep in for an Audi estate to get more MPG and lower running costs, but that will mean a sizeable loan for a few yrs
Fuel is only ever going to go one way ^^^ so do I bite the bullet now and get an Audi+debt, or stick with the gas guzzler and be completely debt free in a yr or so
