Piriton
I read somewhere yesterday that you could give your dog a tablet every day to combat allergies, rashes, etc. Has anyone else heard of this?

Re: Piriton
I've heard of giving piriton for allergic reactions , but never as a daily measure , would never give meds unless they are required

Re: Piriton
You can give your dog Piriton to relieve symptoms of allergies - they're safe for use and are often recommended by vets.
What exactly will you be using it for though? If it's an allergy that flares up every day, I'd say that a vet trip should be considered to ensure that there are no underlying illnesses. Although Piriton is safe, you still don't want to put unnecessary chemicals into your dog.

I was just so surprised that anyone would give their dog tablets that are for humans. Size-wise dogs are a lot smaller than us.

Re: Piriton
I use Piriton only on days when he's really suffering. I also use Sudocreme if its just itchy red skin rather than tablets. If its a daily occurence then I personally would take my pooch the vet.
Like Eleanor said -aviod unnecessary chemicals if you can!

Antihistamines don't work in the same way as other medications, so size of the patient doesn't matter. They prevent attachment to the histamine receptors, so it reduces fluid release, swelling and vasodilation. Once they reach their effective dose (the amount of Piriton administered to best treat allergy symptoms) they don't get any stronger. So they'll work enough to block the symptoms, but won't pose a threat to the dog unless you give him a huge overdose.

Yep, it's fine. I give Zeus piriton when his grass allergy flairs up and he's scratching himself all over, it does work. Start off by giving half, if its ok then a full one is fine.

Re: Piriton
Thank you for all your answers Chloe, the white one, does get incredibly pink and itchy after she's been running in grass or paddling in the sea. I put a bit of Sudocrem on and it does help. Although she and Lola lick most of it off! I'll consider giving her a Piriton if and when it flares up a lot.

Re: Piriton
a couple of weeks back marley got a bee sting on his eye which he reacted bad to. the vet gave him piriton and a steroid to take the swelling down. it worked wonders and less than a couple of hours his eye was back to normal.
I dont even have painkillers in the house myself as im not a fan of pill popping but since then i have half a pack in the car and other in the house. as i now know he reacts bad to stings i need something to hand in case he chews on one of them and gets stung in mouth or throught. the good things was that pretty much within a few mins of him having a tab the swelling started to go down alot so from experiance its very effective on dogs and now in my doggie first aid kit

Re: Piriton
Agreed about the Vitamin C. You can also get quercetin (often mixed with Vitamin C) capsules over the counter. The nettle-mixed ones are good, as they have a soothing effect as well.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, we have been away. Deez has allergic reactions to midgy bites, and after taking him to the vets he was prescribed piriton, but only the 4mg, pharmacy only. Works a treat for his sensitive little body.
