Slugs!
Well have planted my runner beans and the damn slugs have eaten most of the leaves, I haven't put pellets down as Vinnie sometimes jumps over onto the veg patch! Anything else I could put down to stop them?

Re: Slugs!
get a couple cans of beer cheap stuff will do enty the beer in a jag or glass whatever and cut the top off and dig hole so it level with cans do 3/4 near your beens and fill the cans up with beer the slug will get drawn to the beer and drop in but you have to keep change the beer after a week or so
Re: Slugs!
I hate slugs too, would avoid them at all costs. I was about to suggest some pet friendly slug pellets then came across this article, please read it if you are considering putting down pellets of any kind:

"The slug pellets the dog had eaten contained a chemical called metaldehyde, which can be fatal if eaten by dogs or other animals".

Re: Slugs!
If the stuff your growing is in pots, apparently if you put copper tape round them, the slugs won't cross it. My friend has been using it and seeming to work

Re: Slugs!
Beer is good. You can get copper strips to place around plants, which slugs hate and won't touch. Also could try broken egg shells around the plants. Diatomaceous Earth can also be used, just make sure you don't inhale it and keep it away from your eyes.
Seaweed is also really good, as it's salty, so slugs avoid it at all costs. You need to be careful though, as the seaweed shrinks slightly when it dries up, so gaps could be made.
You can also use coffee grounds, but I'm not sure which ones work best.
I'm pretty sure there's a garlic-based slug repellent which is safe around pets as well.

Crushed egg shells around the plants slug don't like to go over the sharp pieces

Re: Slugs!
Yes, egg shells are the most effective, followed by beer traps.
Are you sure it's slugs, though? Are there slime trails on the plants?

Re: Slugs!
I have been and had a look Caryll and there doesn't seem to be any trails on the plants.

Re: Slugs!
Then it could well be pigeons! We get terrible problems with wood pigeons on our allotment! They strip every bit of green off the plants leaving them looking like skeletons.
Try covering them in some pond netting to keep the pigeons off.

Re: Slugs!
We planted 90 plants last year (a mixture of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beans) and we ended up with about a dozen! Bloody pigeons ate the lot of them.
We've invested in some pond netting this year!

That's awful when you put so much hard work into it all. Hope you are luckier this year Caryll.

Re: Slugs!
Only one I knew about was crushed egg shells. Hoping to grow my own veg in the garden next year so will be using some of these tips. thanks all

Re: Slugs!
Well put some jam jars in the ground and filled with strawberry cider, which my stepson left. They love it I have loads of drunken snails in my jars and my beans are looking much healthier!

Re: Slugs!
Ohhh what a great fix Inez! Good to hear the beans are looking better!
