Stop play fighting
Hi can anyone help?! We have just rescued a 6 month old puppy to keep our 2 1/2 year old company. The problem is they are just play fighting constantly. Luna, the older dog, is covered in cuts and scrapes. I'm worried one of them is really going to get hurt.

Re: Stop play fighting
I only have Chiquito so unfortunately I am not able to offer any advice, one of our members who has experience with two (or more!) dogs will be along with some advice for you shortly though

Re: Stop play fighting
My 2 girls do a lot of play fighting. Staffies tend to play rough and can make some awful growling noises when they do. You just need to keep an eye on them

They do play rough! Just keep an eye on them & if you feel it's getting too much, step in with a word (like "Enough" or "Stop" etc), and seperate them - if necessary in seperate rooms until they've calmed down. But you'll have to do it every time so that they start to realise what "Enough" (or whatever) means!

Re: Stop play fighting
I don't stop the boys play fighting and the are both covered in scars and scraps, you will know when one's had enough or is hurt and thats when you should stop play.
Don't worry they play very very rough!

Thanks for the comments :-) its just really annoying when you are trying to lie in but they are awake and wanting to play from 6am.

Re: Stop play fighting
Well we often get play fighting on our bed at 6am as Tilly has deserted us through the night and decides to join back in , she would quite happily just lie down but no Tommy won't have that . You will find they play less as they get a little older but they will always play to an extent and yes it does get rough and yes there will be scars

Re: Stop play fighting
They do play really rough! I used to worry that Gwen was going to get hurt but then I realized she absolutely loves it and when she has had enough she will run over to me and let me know! When we get her together with my brothers dog Otis she sometimes even bleeding by the time we leave. If you feel it is getting too rough you can step in and separate them but usually one dog will alert the other when they have had enough, and if the other dog continues just separate them for a bit until they calm down!

Re: Stop play fighting
As above really, I had a 3 year old Staffy and we got a puppy Staffy, even the puppy Staffy was playing rough! I just leave them to it unless I hear a yelp or see any humping going on!
Heres a video of them together when the puppy was only 8 weeks old!

Re: Stop play fighting
Thanks for the messages. I guess we will have to get used to them playing. It is Luna, the older dog, that's coming off worse from the playing with cuts on her face but she's always going back for more as she loves it.

Re: Stop play fighting
was the same here, especially until the puppys baby teeth came out, I would focus on a word to split them up as mentioned above to stop them if they are making you uncomfortable.
My dogs have calmed down abit as times gone
