stop pups fighting
hi all
i have to 9 week old female staff pups and they constantly fight and scrap don't think its nasty fighting more play fighting.
Is there anyway of calming them down? I have a massive crate that they both sleep in and when they go to sleep there really good like sisters should be. Its the smaller of the 2 that starts its she is so mischievous, whereas the the other one is a little bit calmer.

Re: stop pups fighting
they puppy so they will fight but becasue you have 2 female i would tell them to stop it straight away becasue in a year time it may become a problem where you may have to rehome one.
Re: stop pups fighting
I think it is just normal but I would definately try to discourage it.

Re: stop pups fighting
It may only be play fighting, and a certain amount is normal & very good for them, but if it goes on too long, or it gets a bit heated then I'd stop them. I think it's a bad idea having them both sleep in the same crate, to be honest because you can't seperate them if necessary.

Like the others say - normal, but you want to be able to control it. Perhaps add a "that's enough" cue and then if they don't stop playing you separate them for a while? That should eventually teach them that they have to play by your rules. You want to be able to control when and where they get to play rough.
Re: stop pups fighting
also make sure you separate them regularly so they don't become to dependent on each other, i kind of forgot about this and now my two hate being apart. training them to stop wrestling if i say "quit it" also helps if they are being wound up by another dog.

Re: stop pups fighting
i would say stop them when it no longer is playing. Having them sleep in the same cage, could also lead to problems later on. I know of someone who had a dog for a year got a puppy and ended up having the 1 year old put down because it bit the owner (it was his own fault, and i dont agree that the dog should have been put down, the puppy should have been re-homed). And they had problems because they had one water bowl between them and had one cage which they shared, so they started to feel like they had no personal space.
