new addition coming soon :)
Well, we've made our decision, we're getting another. I do feel slightly bullied tho We spoken for months about this. We've discussed everything, from cost, to how kenny will cope to daily living/walking.
One or both will be neutered, insured and much loved. We have decided on a puppy. I personally wanted to re-home, god knows there's plenty out there. The others want a pup to bring up our way. We've looked for months and finally think we've found the right one. Temperament means a lot to me and if this pup is anything like her mother, she'll be amazing. The dame recently "fostered" a failing puppy, and thanks to her beautiful loving ways, the little one is fighting fit. Our little one will be moving in two weeks. I havnt got a pic yet, but you know me camara happy. I think i've thought of everything, but any hints , tips and advice will be much appriated.

Great news .... we have concidered a pup (loads of times), as you say, they can be brought up with your own dog so there's a better chance of it all working out .. but my consiance shouts "re-home, re-home" .. and we've ended up doing neither to date

Sounds like you have many exciting times ahead of you , sorry I cannot offer any personal experience to you as I have never had 2 dogs at the same time, sounds like a lot of fun though and hard work. Good luck with it don't forget the camera

The first month or so was absolute mayhem for me once the honeymoon period is over though its fine! They were constantly play fighting and running around and at the time Sierra was the size of Baileys head so was scared incase he squashed her
Having more than one dog isn't actually much harder than having one in all honesty! I have 3 dogs and I don't think I could have any less now, maybe 2 would be better, but 3 works for us as Meg is never on lead so don't need to hold 3 leads with 2 hands

Kenny was two in may, he's a chilled out young fella. I think a friend will be good, although i do have a concern, He's not great with some dogs. This was part of the reason for getting a pup and not an older dog. I'll take the intro between them slowly. Any tips guysDave wrote:kenny d wrote:A little girl:x

Agree with you Stu , it's pretty easy having 2 apart from the costs , it's more complicated , for instance if you had someone look after 1 in an enmerency they may not be so keen on 2 etc
My 2 occupy each other most of the time or sleep , so even on the days where the weathers rubbish or I'm away so they don't get off lead they still get to enjoy mental time in the garden etc

I think we were very lucky as it was love at first sight with our two We carried 8 week old Chloe in and 7 month old Lola did a double take, wagged her tail until it nearly fell off and they just fell asleep curled up together and have been inseparable ever since. Hope all goes well

It's lovely to have two, only advice would be to introduce away from home, let them get used to each other first then bring home together. Keep food and eating separate and always give them equal fusses. Good luck

Thank you. I was going to bring her into the house and keep her on my lap and let him sniff her lol, Would it be better for her to meet ken out side of the house? xxlovemystaffies wrote:It's lovely to have two, only advice would be to introduce away from home, let them get used to each other first then bring home together. Re: new addition coming soon :)
The only thing I would advise is get a cage to put one in while you are out. That way they can't get into a fight and get carried away. My female has a cage in the living room and is happy to go into it if we are going to have to leave my 2 behind, she is a bit more boisterous than the male and to be honest some times she needs a referee to take charge of the playing. I wouldn't really like to come home to a play that has got out of hand, I really don't believe that there would be a problem with them being loose but I would rather not take the chance, so my male, who is a bit of a pushover is loose and she is in a cage that you could fit a pony into.

Re: new addition coming soon :)
Congratulations on getting a new addition, looking forward to seeing pics. We got our staffy puppy four weeks ago, we already have a 14 year old male collie cross and a 6 year old female boxer. My priority since we got Reggie has been ensuring he integrates well and bonds with Rupert and Rikki, it has been a non stop job so far and challenging at times but I feel my hard work is starting to pay off. My boxer Rikki initially found it hard to adjust but she and him are finally starting to become the friends I hoped they would be.
Regarding introducing the two of them, try the following:
When you take her home initially, maybe bring Kenny out into the garden, hold the pup and let him have a sniff. Have some nice tasty treats, and reward him for sitting/sniffing the pup politely etc, that way he will immediately start to form a good association with her. Continue the same process inside the house. Bear in mind the pup may be a little nervous in a new environment so ensure he doesn't overwhelm her.
Monitor all interactions carefully, pups can be pretty rude and while they need to learn appropriate behaviour and often get a telling off from adult dogs, you don't want her getting in his face so much so that he ends up getting really irritated and frustrated with her. If she's bothering him, he's likely to tell her off with a growl or a snap, which is perfectly normal, however if she doesn't seem to be listening to him and keeps annoying him, interrupt the situation and separate them momentarily.
Start taking them out for walks together as soon as you can, when we got Reggie he wasn't due his second vax for another week, however I started taking him out on bonding walks with my boxer Rikki straight away (she was more unsure of him then Rupert so I felt their relationship needed more work) I take them out twice a day to the big green area in our estate, Reggie is on a long line so I have some control over him, and can interrupt if needs be but I basically try to step back and just let them run and sniff together. I also ensure they both have time together (always supervised) in the house and out in the garden.
Ensure they are fed separately and be careful with valuable resources such as toys, high value food items etc - only give them these if you can supervise them.
It will be vital to crate train the puppy from day one, she will need to learn how to relax and have down-time, and it will give Kenny (and the humans!) a break from her if needs be. Reggie has a number of nap/chillout times in his crate during the day, which he loves.
good luck and look forward to hearing your updates
