Winston's habits
Hi there I'm new to this site and thought id try it out see if I could get any help with my dogs habits. I have recently had my staffy Winston from a rescue home and he is about 11 years old. As many staffys are mine is incredibly noisy and whines 24/7 so first of all i wonder if there is a way to prevent the constant whine? He also shakes uncontrollably if he knows he is going out, as soon as he gets out he is fine but until he is out side he is all round your feet and constantly shaking. Finally he is very aggressive towards other dogs both on and off the lead and I would like to try and retrain him to not attack other dogs as we have to take him out when no ones around and ask people to keep theirs away from him. We did once try using a muzzle so we could try taking him out with another staffy in the family to see if he would get on with him if he got used to him but this didn't work and he ended up on top of him trying to pin him down, he seams to shake and stare at them well licking his lips before growling and attacking. any help would be most appreciated. thanks Chives09

Re: Winston's habits
Resues can be difficult as you don't know their history and any bad experiences they have had in the past. I would keep him on lead around other dogs and focus on just letting him settle and enjoy his new home. Give him some space when he wants it and let him come to you. Work on the basic commands with positive reinforcement and go from there.
If you know someone with an older dog that isn't aggressive try walking him with them keeping yourself and the other handler in the center with the dogs on the outside at first.

Also it would help if you took some time to read the "for new owners" and other sections from the top portion of the forum. There are lots of well researched articles addressing all sorts of issues from health to behaviour that are very informative.

Re: Winston's habits
all credit to you for giving an elderly dog a good home.
He's obviously got a lot of history behind him which you don't know about, and a lot of learned habits.
jstaff's advice is excellent and I can't add anything to it - just wish you all the best luck and patience in the world ><

Re: Winston's habits
Hi there, welcome to the forum
Poor Winston, it sounds like he has some issues.
How long have you had him? It's quite possible he's still still settling in and the whinning and fear of going out will ease with time. In regards to the dog aggression as jstaff said if you can try slowly socialising him with non agressive dogs if possible. I wouldn't be letting him off the lead for sure.

Re: Winston's habits
With the fear of going out I would be giving him lots of fuss and praise, treats too maybe as your getting him ready, see if that helps It could be that he's worried where he's going ie back to kennels and then once he realises it's just a walk he's OK, if so this will hopefully ease with time.
