Douglas in Edinburgh
Hello, I'm new here. Introducing Douglas, rescued from the SSPCA in Glasgow in February. Now he lives in Edinburgh. He's aged between 18 months and two, so full of energy. Here is the boy:
A few more pictures here: https://picasaweb.google.com/101193641673446682905/Douglas
Douglas gets two regular tins of Pedigree Chum a day, with a small amount of kibble thrown in. He doesnt normally leave anything on his plate. In addition, in the mornings he gets a dental chew or a dried cod skin. Last thing at night he gets a bowl of porridge. Today we were out walking and met Bruno, same size, same gender, who gets two LARGE tins of Pedigree Chum a day. So now I'm wondering if I'm feeding Douglas enough. He is a very fit dog, very athletic and I would like to keep him trim. At the same time, I want him to have enough. He weighs about 45 pounds (20 kilos), so may be fairly large for a SBT. He hoovers up anything he can find while we're out walking, difficult to stop him, he's so fast. I'm trying to figure out whether this is because he's hungry or just because he's hard-wired to hoover. If anyone has a view, I'd be very pleased to hear from you.

Hello and welcome, Douglas is gorgeous
2 tins sounds like alot but I'm not sure on the nutritional value in pedegree? Generally the better quality foods have a higher meat content and you need to feed less. This is a list of recommended foods on the forum which may be of interest

Also if you do a seperate post in the food forum you may get more advise

Re: Douglas in Edinburgh
Hi, welcome to the forum.
Douglas (love the name!) is a handsome boy.
I'd try & get him off the pedigree tinned food if you can - all tinned food is about 80% water, so you have to feed a lot more to get the right nutrition in them! Stay clear of Bakers, Pedigree and any food that has coloured bits in it!

Re: Douglas in Edinburgh
Welcome from me and another SSPCA Glasgow rescue named Douglas
I agree with the above re changing the food. Our Doug gets Pero, a dry food, mixed with natures menu, a natural wet food, twice a day and he's come on leaps and bounds from when we picked him up in April. He was really underweight, we're getting there slowly

Re: Douglas in Edinburgh
Hello and welcome to the forum from me and Gwen! I would definitely get him off the Pedigree!!! It is not a great food and there are many other foods that are much better! Generally you want the first ingredient to be some kind of meat, not grains or filler!
