Need a distraction method
Hi everyone
So the other day whilst on the field with Otis and his beloved frisbee, a small cocker spaniel type dog came over and wanted to play. All went well and they ran around and said hello, but the owner didn't want to hang around and I tried to distract Otis with treats and his frisbee which weren't having much of an effect Eventually I had to step on his long-line so we could end the play time.
So what I want to know is has anyone got any good tips for distracted their dogs at moments like that so you can get their attention.
Cheers

Re: Need a distraction method
I use a squeaky ball for Otis and when he comes to me he either gets the ball thrown in opposite direction of other dog, or he gets a treat.

Loki's the same, I find that the 'watch' command is good, so he looks at me, and then I do a few tricks so he focuses on doing what I'm asking.

Squeaky toy and treats here too
(We have been practicing the watch command a lot .. but at the moment when there are other dogs 'watch' means me standing there looking at Chiquito run the other way )

Vinnie responds very well to a stick bit simple I know but it works for us

Treats work for us but squeeky balls and a whistle are also good

I'm working on this at the moment as Bacchus appears to be at the teenage phase. One of the things I do is, when he is off-lead and there are no distractions, I wait until he wanders off doing his sniffing at smells thing. I then do the "puppy recall" ( running backwards calling him excitedly like an idiot ) and when he comes, lots of praise and treats. I do this several times during a walk. It's early days but things are improving. When playtime with his pals is over I call him and he ponders the situation but pretty much invariably follows me.
