Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
I've always put salmon oil/fish oil in Zeus's food but have never used 'human grade' oil, only oil which is labelled specifically for dogs as I don't want to give him too much of a strong dosage.
I've given him Fish4Dogs salmon oil before, but I am currently using Hunter Salmon Oil: http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_health/skin_coat_supplements/hunter/139622

This is the one I use - it's reasonably priced & you can squirt it on!

Bacchus gets a teaspoonful of Fish4dogs salmon oil in his breakfast every day but I am considering stopping as his food ( Eden Complete ) is quite high in omega 3 anyway. Having said that his coat shines which I put down to the salmon oil. But check if your food has a high omega3 content.

Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
I go to the big wholesale fish market every now and again, buy a huge gutted salmon, descale it etc, chop it into small steaks and freeze them individually. Dogs can eat raw fish bones no problem.
Rupert seems to like frozen salmon and I give it to him maybe once or twice a week depending on his "stools". I also buy fresh sardines from fish market and do the same with them. It ends up costing very little - and of course it is nice to have some salmon myself every now and again!
I also give him Hemp oil every so often because it is convenient, has lots of omegas in it and I can get a bottle from health food store.
Hope that helps.

I use salmon oil. Used to use the same fish oil I used to take, but was told salmon oil is better, so that's what I use now. I get one that's advertised for dogs.

Teddy has Pilchards twice a week and his coat is really good, in fact Caroline who used to walk him when he was in the rescue has remarked how good his coat is now.
As he is not fond of the dry biscuits that I normally mix with his food (he eats them under protest or if he is hungry) I normally mix his Pilchards with Pasta twists which he does like.

A friend of mine gives his Bulldog the tinned sardines from Lidl and he swears
by it. It took a few weeks but the dogs coat is amazing..

I can never find sardines in our local Lidl store. Herring etc. but no sardines. Maybe depends on the size of the store. I might ask the staff next time I'm in. What do you pay for them? I get Morrisons own brand for 47p.

Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
thank you so much quys and gals for all your input.
i do have another problem, Bella is no point blank refusing to eat this wainrights kibble, no matter if i warm it with water and mash it up or but a little gravy in it or even mix it with her old tinned food she just sniffs at it and walk off maybe takes a few bites from it here and there.
i did put an egg yolk in it and mixed it up and she finished the lot no problem but i have heard you not to give them raw aegg everyday once a week ihave been told??
i dont no if i should just ride it out and hopefully she will start eating it as she will be getting hungry or change her back over to tinned which i dont really wanna do??????

Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
Stick with it. If you give in you risk turning her into a "picky" eater. Give her 10 mins and if she doesn't eat it take it away then nothing until her next meal time. She will eat eventually, no dog will starve itself. You could try a different flavour but I doubt that would make any difference if she is refusing it with tasties mixed in. Did you change her over gradually from tinned to dried in order to get her used to the different texture?

Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
You could put a bit of raw egg in every day - i.e. half. I seem to remember it's fine to give dogs raw egg often.
Any oily fish is fine. Sardines, pilchards, mackerel, herring, salmon, sprats etc.
Rupert was iffy about quite a lot of his food until he got used to it and understood how to eat it and I understood how he liked to eat it. With raw fish he likes it frozen as I think it's more fun to chew. Anyway, he loves it now. He also loves tinned sardines etc. Also he loves sprats.
It is obvious now that I think of it that Rupert has a much healthier diet than I do.

Re: Salmon oil /fish oil
I get the fish oil tablets for humans from the pharmacy.
I think in general it is cheaper to get the ones for humans than the ones that are for pets (but it's the same thing)!
