New to dogs needing some advice
Hi my name is Laura we are a family of 4 and have just rescued our new family member Lilly.
She is a 3yr old staff and is amazing we have had her just over 4wks and she has settled in no problem and is very well behaved.
The problem we have is other dogs, she can be fine one minute then snarling and snapping the next. It seemed to be worse on the lead then off until today when i met with friends and their dogs only to end up with my dog attacking one of theirs he sniffed her behind she then sat down and he was on top of her before I knew it she attacked him and they had a fight leaving him with some minor injuries thankfully i have a very understanding friend! We were told by kennels she loved dogs until she was bit on nose she then became cautious. She has been used for breeding in her previous home and is due to be spayed in June. Any advice would be great we live in an area of huge doggy funfilled fields I would hate to not be able to let her off to enjoy these

Re: New to dogs needing some advice
I can only suggest a flexi lead for now so you have total control at all times, and socialise as much as you can but only if she wants to. Being a rescue you will never know there past fully, she may never be brilliant with other dogs, or you will find ones that she is good with and ones not so. Don't be sad, build up some trust then you can start on a long line, Lilly can enjoy freedom and you can work on things together Xx

Welcome to the forum from me and the Monster
Yes, flexi leads and training leads are a God send and all dog owners should have them IMO.

Welcome if you have any calm, friendly dogs you know, walk her with them, but at first at a distance, then if they seem OK, slowly bring them closer together. Hopefully then she'll learn not all dogs are going to hurt her.

Re: New to dogs needing some advice
Thanks guys is a flexi lead the plastic handle kind that winds in and out? Do you think dog training classes would help even though she is already very well behaved when it comes to sitting etc

Re: New to dogs needing some advice
Hi and welcome from me and Daisy
Yes that's right about the flex lead, all pet shops should sell them or you can order on line. That definitely sounds like the place to start, it's still early days so one step at a time.
I'm not sure a training class would be of any help with this, I've just done some classes and they weren't about socialising the dogs, however, you could speak to some local dog trainers to see what services they offer.

Re: New to dogs needing some advice
Excellent advice from Janey.
Yes, that's the lead that winds into the handle. I'd get the strongest you can, and preferable a tape lead rather than a cord lead.
Training classes might or might not help. It depends on how the classes are set out, and whether the trainer is prepared to help with the issues you have. It could be an idea to just sit & watch some training classes before you start going just to see whether you think they'd be useful.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
I'm sure you will find the long training of much use, we use one with Rocky so he can have some freedom for a run about but still be under close control at all times.
