Another Newbie
Hi Everyone. Ive just found this forum and think its great! There are not many staffy owners around where i live, so the information ive been reading is fantastic. My name is Chris and 8 months ago i decided to adopt a staffy from the Dogs Trust. His name is Blade and hes around 2 and a half years old. When we first enquired about him, he was so nervous around people that we had to go and visit him a few times a week in the dogs home so that he got use to us. Once we had him home, he was like a completely different dog.Hes so excited all the time, especially with new people. I couldnt imagine my life without him now. Definitely a part of the family. Im hoping these pictures have work properly so enjoy

Blade, you look very cool in your red harness.
Lamby, how did you decide on Blade in the end and what was his background? Mine is a rescue too although I never saw what he was like in kennels or rescue centre.

Well my nan had a staffy and i lived with her in London before i moved to wales so ive brought one up for a few years and i always knew i wanted one. My partner was harder to persuade but once we got to the rescue centre it was easy. We were wandering around looking at dogs, they were all barking and jumping at the windows, except blade. He looked so sad sat in his bed and i knew he was the one. We enquired about him and he was brought up by an old lady who became housebound and couldnt take him out and give him the attention he needed. They told us he was there for a few months and there was no interest in him whatsoever! Not sure how as hes a brilliant dog!
Where abouts did you get Rupert from? Did you know what his background was before you got him?

I got him from a Rescue in North London by accident. I had volunteered to foster a dog. I fostered a beautiful labrador ridgeback cross who unfortunately wanted to kill certain types of men. Then I fostered a female Staffy who bit me a lot but she was luckily adopted by a vet who I hope has helped her overcome this behaviour. So I wasn't that keen on Staffies but then the rescue called me and asked would I foster another - they sent me a picture of Rupert and frankly he looked terrifying but I'd already said yes. My sister had just come over to visit me and she had jet lag and was cross that we were spending her first day in the UK travelling up to a park in London to pick up some random dog. We were both a bit shocked when we then clapped eyes on him as he was massive and completely out of control (couldn't walk on lead). Rescue people said: bye then, speak later. Rupert was like a giant salamander wriggling everywhere and also smelling really bad of kennels. We didn't have a car so we had to take him on the train but when we got to the station, eventually (it took quite a bit of effort to get him there and it was a bit embarrassing how manically he was tugging at his lead and going off in all directions), he was too scared to go down the steps. My sister picked him up (he is very heavy!) and carried him down and that was the moment she understood his nature. When we got home we washed him and he and my sister both collapsed on the living room floor and fell fast asleep. It was the first moment I fell in love with him. I remember the scene so well. I still have the photographs. I never in a million years could have guessed what an amazing dog he is. So friendly, not aggressive, so cuddly and actually ok to train as well. He has come such a long way. And to think I almost called the rescue centre and said he's too out of control for me to cope with! He is my lucky charm. Had him almost a year now.

aww thats great. At least hes found a loving home instead of being stuck in them awful kennels all day long! When we first enquired about Blade, they told us he can be a right handful (you would have thought it as he was the only dog not jumping up and down at the Kennel window) and that he is very scared of new people and very protective of people he is use to (they tried not to say agressive so we wouldnt be too scared). We had to go and visit him a few times a week for 3-4 weeks to get him use to us. The first time we took him for a walk with the member of staff, they told us we could not approach him, he had to come to us. After 2-3 visits, blade started recognising us and he looked so happy when we walked up to the window where he was sat quietly. They eventually said he could come and stay 1 night with us to see how he was. He spent the day getting use to the house and was very excited but nervous aswell. Il never forget my partners face when we had to take him back on the sunday as she had grown so attached to him. The moment i knew he was ours and 1 i will never forget was when we took him back on the Sunday, as we walked away he sat on the floor, looked at us and just cried and cried and would not go back to his kennel. I had to walk him into his kennel. Needless to say we got the paperwork the next day and he was home for good. Hes gone from being so scared, pulling on the lead and snapping at my hands when giving him a treat to the complete opposite. He loves attention and new people, will never pull on the lead and weve now taught him a few commands and he no longer snaps at anyone when giving him a treat. Couldnt have wished for a better dog

Re: Another Newbie
I love these stories. I consider myself to be very lucky. If my sister hadn't been there, if he hadn't just come into kennels, if the rescue centre hadn't been so assertive.... was it fate, good luck, coincidence, a question of perfect timing... who knows.
Even from the pictures you can tell your boy is a very happy boy.
