Hi everyone, our new blue staffy Bauer might need your help!
Hi,
So we rescued a lovely blue staffy last thurs from the pound, this guy was literally on death row. Obviously he is still getting used to us and his surroundings so I know above all patience is a virture. BUT when we picked him up the girl at the rescue told us he spins round in a circle whilst being walked... we thought "Oh Ok, we can sort that & hopefully its stress". Well we got him back and she was right he seemed to spin round clock-wise over & over. Over the last few days we have started to try correct him when he does it and he doesn't do it unless he is unsure or really excited. Now here comes the next part, when we let him off the lead he literally will run around us clockwise in a circle...he will run off then straight back to us. Now I am sure he is just unsure and perhaps a little nervous we might leave him but obv this cannot be good he constantly wants our attention while off the lead and continues to run in clockwise circles. Has anybody got any ideas, solutions or thoughts???
Thanks
Oh and here are a few pics of the big man

What a stunner and well done on the rescue. I guess it is just going to take a little time, maybe keep him on lead for now so that you can correct him when he does this. Hi and welcome to the forum Xx

Welcome what a handsome boy. I think it's just him getting used to everything, so I think it'll get better with time when he's more used to you and shows more interest in exploring his surroundings, really.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Spinning around is not a good thing for a dog to do and this can lead to severe behavioural problems. Try to distract him with a toy or get him running after a ball.
Well done for saving him from the pound.

Hello and welcome, as I said before hes a stunner. Perhaps he only had such a little space to play in before, and that may have caused the spinning round thing. But with time and patient, he will hopefully out grown it and only do it now and then.

Welcome to the forum Unfortunately I don't have any experience in this, but I am sure someone will be along to help you. He is a lovely boy and I am sure it will be worth the training.

Hello and welcome to the forum
It's all new to him, new owners, new home and new surroundings. It will take time for him to get used to it, as mentioned, try and distract him with toys.
Well done on the rescue, such a handsome chap!

My guess is he has been crated a lot, i see this type of behaviour in a lot of working dogs. There is not really much that can be done if he has it in his system, just as you are already doing by trying to distract him.

Hello and welcome to the forum from me and the kids
I don't have any staff experience on this matter , but we did used to own a BC X that was very much like this when we privately rehomed him . He never grew out of the habit 100% but he did get a lot better with time as he grew to know us . But you must use every distraction you can , certainly a good game of fetch , try some tug etc with him , anythjing that doesn't involve going round and round in circles is a good start. Try carrying a plastic bottle with a few stones in you can rattle as a distraction to him as well
Lovely looking boy btw

Re: Hi everyone, our new blue staffy Bauer might need your help!
Welcome to the forum from me and the Monster
Agree with Hayley that it sounds like a dog that has been confined a lot and has a head full of steam. It is maybe also just his way of showing a bit of anxiety with adjusting to his new surroundings. In both cases it's a matter of baring with him until he gets it out of his system and feels comfortable in his new home.
Personally, I wouldn't be letting him off lead until this sort of excited behaviour calms down.
He is stunning too btw

Re: Hi everyone, our new blue staffy Bauer might need your help!
Aww thanks a lot for all the lovely comments he is such a stunning lad. Yeah i will take on all the suggestions. I do personally think he will grow out of it in time, as he has already shown signs of great improvement. He used to do it on the lead every 10 or so secs and now it's non-existent. When we let him off the lead he is starting to explore a bit more. I think with time he will get used to us and we can start training him to play fetch etc & use distractions.
Thanks again, you will no doubt hear updates and see us popping up in various threads

Hi and welcome from me and Daisy, well done on the rescue
What about getting a long training line rather than letting him off lead? Atleast until he settles down a bit and you get to know each other a bit better. Keep at the training and I'm sure he'll improve with time. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress

Hi and welcome from me and the furballs, hope you enjoy the forums
he is a stunner! only other dog I've known to do the clockwise circleing is a collie on one of our walks and she does it to keep an eye on where everyone is. he maybee just a bit excited, unsure and wanting to make sure your in sight. he may well grow out of it as he gets more confident that youll be around for him. you could also try some fetch games to get his attention on something else but help his need to please you.

Hi and welcome to the forums.
My boy is the same in a way but he won't walk around us, but if we let him of the lead he does not go anywhere he always stays around us, which I find good in a way... But if you want to stop him spinning, get a squeaky ball or something he likes, squeak it and he should stare at it and stop spinning, reward him for doing so and then after a while start using a queue like "stop" for whenever you want him to stop spinning, after a while take the ball away so do everything you did before just without the ball, don't forget to say stop... He should now understand stop means to stop it, or you could say stay which in a way would make more sense or whatever you want to use as a command to snap him out of spinning
He's beautiful and congratulations on saving a dog!

Re: Hi everyone, our new blue staffy Bauer might need your help!
What a beauty, and what lovely eyes. I think distraction may help, and be consistant. I also think the little guy needs to settle in. Hopefully once he has, he'll calm down. I think plenty of mental activity is whats needed to. Their quite a clever breed and love mental stimulation, as mentioned above, if in his previous home he's been crated alot, i think he proberly hasnt had enough attenstion. You could try having 3 cups, and hide a high reward treat. If he finds it, be really OMG good boy, if he doesnt, dont say anything, just give him a sneaky peak, move the cups around and see what happens. He sounds to me he may be stressed also. Give your baby time, you'll get there. Well done on rescuing xxx
