My 8-month old is bleeding... O_O
Hi all,
New dog owner here, just saw my 8-month old puppy bleeding and her vagina is swollen. She can't have hit "puberty" yet, right?!?
Coz she's only a baby!!!!!!
Is this normal? How long will she be bleeding for? Should I be worried? Should I keep her inside in case some other dog jumps the fence & tries to hump her? O_O

Yep, they grow up so quicky . I don't know how long it lasts for or anything, but you don't have to keep her inside the whole time as long as you can walk her in quiet areas at quiet times of the day/night. If there's a possibility that dogs can get through your fence, I'd keep her inside unless she can be completely supervised though.

Awww she is growing up Steff had her first season at exactly 8months You now need to keep her away from all entire (undesexed) male dogs for 21 days.. It is not a lot of fun Be very careful too as she will turn into a fair tart in the next week or 2 and will want to "get" to males You may also want to invest in some hygiene pants to prevent the mess.. Good Luck And I still call Steff a puppy

Hey, Cat, yes she's in season! But she's still a puppy as well.
She's be in season for about 21 - 28 days (they're all different), and although males will be interested in her straight away, she won't be interested in them for about 10 days or so. Then she'll be an absolute tart! So from about 10 days into her season until the very end, keep her well away from dogs.
As already said, hygiene pants for dogs are a very useful daytime help, but don't leave them on overnight.

Yes because she is in heat, it affects any part of the body that is linked to sex hormones

Don't dread it - most bitches go through their seasons with no problems whatsoever!

Katy lifts her leg when other dogs want to sniff her( was accused of her peeing on someone's dog the other day) I said she's female! Anyway what's she going to be like in season, I will have to walk her when I get up at 5am then about 9pm to miss other dogs

Most bitches will be dead against dogs sniffing them during the first 10 days of their season, but after that...........anything goes!
I used to walk my bitches on lead only from the first sign of a season right to the end, and even then the last 10-14 days would only be at very unsociable hours!

Mother nature - bless her! - doesn't always understand that when a dog (or human come to that) becomes physically mature enough to release an egg cell it doesn't mean that little girl (whether dog or human) is physically or mentally mature enough to bear offspring.
She's still a puppy - just keep her "safe" as mentioned above!

Thanks to everyone's advice, I can't believe their "cycle" goes for that long.
Poor things. =(
It's bad enough for us female having to go through with it for 3-5 days, how much more 3 weeks?! Yikes!
Btw, does that mean I can't take her to her dog training class where there are 3-10 dogs in the class? o_O

May be an idea to keep her home from them, would be a bit of a distraction for the others there.

Re: My 8-month old is bleeding... O_O
Kathy's right - I used to go to a training class with a bitch and when the time was coming up for her to be due in season I asked the trainer if I could still bring her and he said "god NO - there'd be chaos". So we missed out on 3 weeks' classes, but she still passed the "exam" at the end and got special commendation for doing so as she had been in season.
Oh and Cat, the heavy bleeding doesn't go on for 3 weeks fortunately, the first week of so of bleeding is nature having a "clear-out" and making everything lovely to prepare for future pups, so don't be misled and think that because she has stopped bleeding she is safe because that is the most dangerous time! Be guided as to whether the vulva is still swollen or not to determine when the season is likely to be finished.
