Uncontrollable whining when I leave
Hi All,
I'm sure a lot of other people have encountered this problem given we are all staffy owners and it is a well known trait of there's but my 8 month old boy Reggie whines uncontrollably when I tie him up out the front of a shop and I go inside. It doesn't matter whether he can see me or not, it makes no difference.
I'm sure in his mind he's thinking "this is it, this is the time when he leaves me and never comes back".
It's gotten to the point of embarrassment so I won't do it anymore. Any advise on how to stop this??
Cheers,
Mitch.

Re: Uncontrollable whining when I leave
Is it because he's missing you or because he's excited? I'm sure if I tied Loki outside and went into a shop, I'd hear him cry non-stop because he wants to meet everyone but can't. In which case, I think the solution is just to work on getting him to meet people calmly (if he doesn't already), but if it's part of his personality to get that excited, it might just be one of his traits. If it's because he misses you, you'll just have to work on it and build it up gradually. Start off at home first, leave him for just a little while and then come back, and increase the time slowly until he realises it's not a big deal though.
I have to say though, I don't know what it's like where you live, but I know over here, and in some parts of Australia from what our members have said, dog thefts are very common, particularly Staffs, so be very careful with leaving him tied up outside when he's out of sight

Agreed with Tara Don't leave him tied up out the front of a shop there are too many dog thieves around and the things they are putting our babies through are disgusting It is becoming a widespread problem in Australia But if at home you can leave him for short amounts of time and build it up gradually until he realises you are gonna come back

Re: Uncontrollable whining when I leave
Thanks guys. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood where most people know each other so he's fairly safe but I guess you can never be too sure.
He is actually fine at home by himself. I work 9am - 5pm and he is hme alone all this time and hasn't had a problem. I guess he knows that I'll always be coming home to him. It just seems to be when we are out walking and I pop into a shop that he thinks I'm abandoning him.
Hopefully it us something that he will grow out of and in time will know I'll always be coming back. Fingers crossed anyway!!

Re: Uncontrollable whining when I leave
If he's fine at home, I'm leaning more towards him just being excited. Outside with all of the smells, sights, sounds, etc. and he can't run around and explore because he's tied up is probably why he's crying

Re: Uncontrollable whining when I leave
Great advice given, it's does sound like Tara says that because he's ok at home then it's possibly because he wants to meet everyone, darcy thinks everyone is there to see her & should say hello to her I think it's best not to tie him up incase the worst happens & someone takes him. good luck

Re: Uncontrollable whining when I leave
Never ever leave him tied up in front of a shop. Prime target for dog theft
He is whining because he is nervous and anxious, but the whole situation should be avoided rather than solved IMO
