Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Hi everyone,
I'm Michelle and I've got a 14 week old male staffy puppy. He's gorgeous and delightful and stupid!! We've had him for 6 weeks and he's still not house trained. We've done absolutely everything that we are meant to do and he still messes inside constantly.
Everyone says a dog will never mess where they eat or sleep but that most certainly isn't the case with our puppy. Last night I went to take him outside to pee before we went to bed and in the two minutes I spent to look for a torch he stood on his bed and peed on it.
He really is such a gorgeous dog, so playful and funny but he just doesn't seem to be getting the idea with house training. When we do take him outside (very regularly) to toilet he ALWAYS does something. Other times he'll have been outside playing for a couple of hours and then when you bring him inside he'll mess as soon as he comes inside.
The vet just keeps telling us to do what we are doing but we thought that after 6 weeks he'd have at least SOME idea of house training.

Hi Michelle
Hello from Chiquito and I
Chiquito is also about the same age (13 weeks) and does well with the outside toileting, even wakes me up at night to go outside .. however he still goes to the toilet in odd places throughout the house for no apparent reason at all (after we come inside, after he has just been to the toilet etc). I have put it down to being a puppy and take hope in the days when he does it less than others that he will eventually grow out of it.
We have found that using a saying (ours is 'let's go to the toilet') has helped and we do say it and take him outside even after he has messed inside ... he now goes to the door sometimes when we say it, and occasionally takes himself there when he needs to go out.
Hope it helps a little to know that at least you aren't the only one ...!?

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Hi and thanks.
Its good to know that we are not the only ones having issues with house training. Louie can actually go all night without messing inside. It just seems to be in the afternoon and evenings that he will do it anywhere.
I shall just persevere and hope he gets it.

Welcome ah, don't worry, he's not stupid, it just takes some longer than others. Continue with what you're doing; take him out every 30 or so minutes and wait for him to go to the toilet, then make a huge fuss of him. Just keep at it. At their age as well as grasping the concept of toilet-training, they don't have any real control over their bladders and they get very excited, so it's easy for them to forget or make mistakes. Loki understood the concept of house-training from day one, but we had a good few accidents for a while because we just weren't getting to the door quick enough. Or because he's too busy playing with his toys to remember he needs to pee . Just keep at it, it's normal, you're not the only one.
By the way, Louie is adorable we have a gallery section if you want to bombard us with pics, just saying

Welcome from chilli and I.
Chilli was also very hard to toilet train and it took a long time for her to get it. She would use her doggy door and go outside when we were home but wouldn't go out when we were.
After a lot of bleach and paper towels she just seemed to get it and stopped going in the house.
Persevere and he will get there.
Good Luck.

Hi & welcome from darcy & me, as Tara says they all learn at different rate, keep up what your doing, look for the signs that he's going to go the toilet, sniffing about, circling etc and try pre empt him going & put him outside. Darcy clicked really early to but we still had accidents were she would just forget
Keep up the good work you will get there. We like lots of pics too

Welcome. Can't add to anything that's been said. Just remember, your not the only one going through this, and it will just click one day. Lola has been great with toilet training and it clicked early on. Although she will sometimes have an accident when she gets overly excited. Or if she's in a lazy mood, she'll stand with her front legs out of the back door and pee in the kitchen.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Just keep doing what you're doing, taking him outside every half an hour regardless of what he has been doing, sleeping, eating or playing and keep him outside until he does go to the toilet. It can be a very frustrating time we all know, just keep at it.

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Hi & welcome.
Don't forget that pups don't have full control over their bladder/bowels until about 5 or even 6 months old!
If, however, he's going outside & then immediately peeing when he gets indoors again, then it's because he doesn't understand what you want him to do.
What have you done/do you do to house train him?

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
I was going to reply to everyone who answered my question individually but couldn't work it out so I hope this group message is ok.
Thanks to everyone who replied. We shall just keep going as we are and hope that at some point Louie gets it. We've actually had some success today. He hasn't peed inside once. My son took him to a friends place and he didn't pee in their house either so I'm hoping that this good luck with continue.
Caryll you asked what we've been doing to house train him. Well we take him outside whenever he wakes up, about 20 minutes after drinking and eating (although we do feed him outside) and every time we take him outside we tell him to do pee pee or poohs and he pretty quickly figured out what that meant because when we tell him to do that he will always do it.
When he pee's inside its usually after he's been outside for a couple of hours so today when I bought him inside after being out for an hour I got him to pee first and he did.

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Thanks Mat. We've actually had a little bit more success today. Louie hasn't messed inside at all. I'm hoping that this continues!
Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
He might just be a slow learner.
You could try taking him outside more often, that will often work. And make sure you remove all traces of urine because if he can smell it, it'll encourage him to go in the same place again. A solution of biological washing powder or liquid does the trick!

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Thanks Caryll. Would vinegar do the trick when I mop the floors? It doesn't bother me if he messes on the kitchen/dining room floor because I can just mop it up but when he messes on the carpet that really bugs me. We are renting our house so it means we'll have to get the carpets cleaned soon.
Can you recommend a specific type of washing powder? I think somebody suggested Bio-Zet to me once.
Also, how long should I wait for him to pee/pooh when I take him outside? Once today I was out there for 20 minutes which was ok because it was a nice day but then I brought him in and thankfully he didn't mess inside. I just felt a bit silly standing out there for so long LOL

Vinegar might be ok on hard floors. For carpets/rugs etc any biological washing powder/liquid will be ok, even the really cheap ones!
I wouldn't stay outside for more than about 10/15 minutes. If he doesn't go, bring him back in but watch him like a hawk - if he starts sniffing around or circling then pop him back outside again!

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Hi and welcome to the forum. I cant really add much to the fantastic advice thats already been shared.
Just make sure you make a huge fuss of him when he goes outside and even reward him with a treat. You will soon learn his actions when he wants to go (circling, sniffing) so get him outside, and like Kell said; use a phrase he can associate with going outdoors, i use "go for wee wee". Remove any scents from indoors where he has previously been, and maybe use a firm 'no' when he does go indoors, but he is only a pup and controlling his bladder is a challenge in itself.
Patience

Welcome sounds like you are already making progress but dont worry it will take time for some dogs. Took me a good couple of months before i saw ANY progress. I startes giving a treat when Alfie did go outside and that made a huge difference. Keep up the good work

Re: Newbie and frustrated puppy owner
Hi im only a newbie to this forum too and fellow aussie, welcome. This forum has been very helpful with a problem ive been having.
In response to your problem, he is still only a puppy and it takes alot of messes before he'll be right. My girl is 23 months and is now pretty good at it. She use to have accidents all the time but now she can go all night inside without a toilet break until around 6am. But i also have a back up plan just in case, when she was youger i trained her in emergencies she can go on a mat in the bathroom so i still have a mat just in case in my ensuite but she never uses it now. Be patient he will eventually get it.

Hello and welcome from me and Ebony! As others said, toilet training can vary between dogs - it takes some longer than others so don't worry Just keep at whatever you're doing, he'll continue having a few accidents but he'll grow out of it with time and training. Just be consistent and he'll be there in no time!
