Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
Hey everyone,
Dont know how to explain this one so I video'd him doing it!
The link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rymCvtidpvw
He's not biting the ground... or really licking it... its like he is kind of rubbing his gums on it? He does it for ages at a time and when he is doing it he is in another world! Doesn't listen to me or want anything to do with anyone!
I don't mind that he does at as long as its not bad for him...
Any suggestions? Or does anybody know what he is doing!

Re: Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
Looking at that video, I'd say it was more of a scratching his bum thing! Does he do it that way every time? I mean with the bum dragging on the floor.
When do you see the vet next for his vaccinations? You might want to ask him to check Duke's anal glands.
In the meantime have a look at his teeth & gums - are his teeth clean, do his gums look a healthy pink, or are they red & sore looking? It's a little early for teething so I don't think it's that, but he could have an inflamed gum.

Have to agree with Caryll, I definatly think its blocked anal glands my first suffered from it, its not serious and you can unblock them yourself but it's really smelly and gross!

Thanks Janey,
How do I unblock them? Or would it be best getting a vet to do it? He doesnt seem to have a problem with "pooing"or anything though

Re: Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
You have to insert your finger up there rectum slightly, and then I am guessing, (haven't done it vets have), they find the gland, theres one on either side I think and give them a little squeze that releses a fluid that is the block! It doesn't effect there pooing they just rub there bums cause its itchy to them.
I thought it was cute when mine did it until I realised what it was!

Definitely let the vet do it! It stinks & it's really messy & they're paid to do it, you're not!

Re: Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
It is very uncomfortable & you or the vet's assistant will have to hold him still. If the glands are really impacted then it can hurt a little, but it's over really quickly.
Good luck!

Re: Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
The glands can often get blocked after a bout of the runs. Normally the action of pooing squeezes the glands & keeps them working properly, but the runs can stop this & they get blocked.
Some dogs do seem to be more prone to it than others, though.

Re: Wierd thing my staffy pup is doing
Do you know of anything else that could be the cause he hasnt had the runs for a good while. I know its not preventable but would like to know why lol.
