Kong
What do you put in yours? Bought one today for the first time, its quite a big one. Needs to be exciting stuff for her, not just her normal food.
Thanks x

Re: Kong
Ive used a small amount of honey (about 1 teaspoon) and smeared it around, peanut butter (small amount). Ive filled it with water and froze it as my pooch likes ice you could add a tiny bit of cordial to give it some taste like an ice pop for pooch's

Re: Kong
Some people put peanut butter in them. Freezing them with meat or mixed with veg is great if you are leaving them while you go out

Chiara - You say meat, would you do raw as well or cooked meats? thanks x

Re: Kong
daft question, but the hole is only small, how do they get the peanut butter out? not sure her tongue would get in...I saw the Kong liver paste in the shop that you squirt in, and i wondered the same about that.
Sorry if im sounding thick. x

yes it can

Re: Kong
I use the kong liver paste and just smear it on the inside only a small amount though as it's concentrated - Keeps Otis busy for a little while. He tends to pick the kong up and squeeze then drop it thinking there are biscuits in there though

Well I have given it to her, to make is easy for her I have put cut up treats in and some grated cheese. She is going mental for it, although she isn't realising the good stuff is coming out?!?!

i make the boys work for their, i don't make it easier i pack it as tight as possible and then freeze it solid so they have to lick at it to defrost it and get the food out

Re: Kong
I normally put different food in stages in blues kong. Like peanut butter at the small hole end then some treats then some cheese and at the end I leave a big treat sticking out to get his interested from the start
He also has an extreme size one which has raw meat chopped up and every so often I give him that instead of putting his dinner in a bowl.

Brilliant ideas above! I wish mine were interested in their kongs! Love the ideas of raw meat

Re: Kong
I sometimes put his dinner kibble in it and top it with a bit of cheese then melt it in the microwave. When it cools it is then solid.
Also mashed banana with low fat plain yogurt and frozen.
Smear peanut butter or honey around the top to get him interested.
Problem is we leave it with him when he is home alone, and he does'nt touch it until we get back, lol

they have to stick their tongue in the larger hole to get it out, it's meant to take them a while and make them think, it's not meant to be easy

Densil sort of chews at it and squashes it as well as putting his tongue inside - usually takes him about an hour with the frozen one. As quoted the idea is to keep them busy trying to get it out.

I met a rep from Kong at our pet shop and she advised to do away with the "normal" dog bowl and only use the Kong for all meals as well as snacks during the day.

Re: Kong
Louby's is the big hard plastic Kong where the bottom screws off, and its like a wibble where it has sand in the bottom so it goes upright again. Only one hole at the side, and not a very big hole.
I think its only good for bits to fall out rather than be able to lick stuff out of it.
She loves it though. Only thing is she barks at it quite a lot which is rather annoying.

Re: Kong
Mine gets ham or corned beef, really stuck in fast so its more difficult to get out, cheese and biscuits, sometimes banana but not all at the same time, jam at the end and freeze it. No matter how tight you think the food is, they get it out eventually, it takes Ozzy ages whcih really keeps him quiet, he loves it

That should be OK as you can put the dirty Kong in the dishwasher if you have one or use very hot soapy water when washing it up then rinse with very hot water too.

Re: Kong
I used to put peanut butter in Tommy's kong but after he had a few episodes of upset stomachs I finally narrowed it down to the peanut butter. Since I stopped giving it to him he has been fine. I now use marmite as sticks the treats in there so he has to work really hard to get them out!

Lola loves her Kong and plays with it without anything in it!
But I barricade it in with biscuits and a dentastick/chew then smear Peanut Butter over the top

Re: Kong
well Louby is now being tested for allergies as her skin isnt good, she had mange but is now clear of that. so she is on hypoallergenic food and nothing else for 6 weeks, no treats, bones, nothing...poor thing. so all i can put in her Kong is her biscuits :-((

Re: Kong
Hi Mrs McFisher
Chiquito has several types of Kongs ..
The kong wobbler (huge with sand in the bottom and a little hole) is made for putting their biscuits/small treats in and isn't made for freezing ... we use this one to put biscuits and small liver treats in and it keeps him well busy
The other kongs he has are the red chew ones (can get black as well) that have two holes and are shaped likes balls or a snowman ... these we stuff with raw meat, biscuits, banana, rice, vegemite etc and freeze before giving to him as a puppy ice block. I also often use vegetable or meat juice (from chicken/veg I cook for him), block the ends with banana and freeze over night .. he loves these too
Hope you find something in that novel that works for you!

Re: Kong
Hi kell, Thanks for that - lots of good ideas. My only problem at the mo is that Louby has to stick to her hypoallergenic food, and have nothing else until we can sort her skin out- we shall just stick to her kong wobbler and put her biscuits in..
Hopefully when we sort out whats going on with her skin we can do more exciting stuff for her as you have suggested. x

You could try soaking some of her biscuits and mix it with hypoallergenic dog meat and stuff the kong with that. James wellbeloved do sachets of hypoallergenic meat. Hope it gets sorted quickly

The black extreme ones are the best. Lola has destroyed a couple but I had them for months before she did this whereas Lily has never destroyed one. I would say they are well worth it

I have the Kong Wobble - its hard plastic, with sand in the bottom of it, so it stands back up again. I cant see any way that she could destroy this.
She barks at it alot though!
