Harlem keeps hurting himself! :(
My 9 month staffie Harlem keeps hurting himself in his crate by trying to get out. Grinding Dow his nails even broke one of em off. My biggest problem is he's always trying to get out. Any ideas of how to keep him clam in the crate for long periods of times. Also does anyone like in the mildenhall, Suffolk area? I would love to meet some staffie owners.

For how long is he in the crate during the day and why ?
Maybe he just wants some fuss or to play a bit, how long is he walked for each time ?

I never closed to door of my crate when training as I did once and Logan broke his wee tooth on the door and I felt horrible. Never put him in the crate unless he agrees to go into it.
Then give him a small treat or favourite toy to keep him in there. Push the door over but don't lock it until he feels comfortable.
Covering the tops and sides with a blanket helps them to calm. I used to also put in an old tshirt of mine that I had worn so he felt comfortable.

How long is he in there for and how much exercise, training and affection does he get? It sounds like he isn't used to being in the crate and doesn't see it as a relaxing place, so if you haven't already, make it comfortable and put in a favourite toy and a great treat, maybe fill a Kong with some delicious food, and wait for him to go in on his own. You want him to be comfortable going in there, not being forced in.

I've tried a few hours and I took him out on a 50 min walk before I put him in. Even his favorite toys and treats.

How long is he in there exactly? A dog shouldn't be left in a crate for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time (the only exception being at night if they are asleep).
How did you get him used to the crate?

My Max did that once, he broke out of his crate and had all sores on his face.
He was use to it and happy be in there until that one occasion.
So i went back to square one, gave him a nice blankee, treats etc, i keep the crate in the living room, close to where me and OH sit, it has blankets for the back and sides, i always leave the door open so he can choose when to go in and out, I even sometimes still sit next to the crate with my ipad whilst max is snoring away in his crate.
I do this a lot during the night, I ask him to go to * bed * and he'll go in his crate and again ill sit or lay next to the crate.
may i ask what is he like on his own with out the crate?
