Mate , I grew up on a council estate with parents who had no jobs . Corned Beef was like a joint to us.
Me mam made the best corned beef and tatie pie in the North East bless her cotton socks, many have tried to match (including her sister) but nobody has EVER made it

Last year when I was at my brothers house in Durham (who is incidentally a little more poorer than me) made me a couple of buns (crusty buns from Greggs) with Spam , absolutely bootiful , almost as orgasmic as egg n chips

cornbeef & Potato (cornbeef ash think) was the poor vision of shepherd pie, instead of having meat at the bottom like shepherd pie you just throw the cornbeef in the potatos when you smash them

Although I feel for you, in another way I'm actually pleased about this, because I can now back up my case with the missus. She moans at me for buying more corn beef even though we already have some, and I keep telling her that one day we might not be able to get any, so it's important to stock up. I can now justify having 10 cans of corn beef in the cupboard

The corn beef ash I had growing up was a layer of corn beef then a layer of sliced potatos and baked in the oven rather than being mashed together, yet when I visited a relative in Devon I was served up "corn beef ash" in a bowl with a spoon, it was vile and was basically stew made with corn beef, if I'm ever offered it now I turn it down as I worry I may be served it stew style again

And today the cash and carry was selling big tins for £1, so now I have 15 tins in the cupboard, love me a bargain

Never tried corned beef pie but have tried corned beef hash, (mash potato & corned beef all mashed together) as a kid, my OH loves it so he'll be gutted too Dave. My daughter had corned beef on a butty in her friends yesterday & has been mortified in case it's poisoned lol (her words) age 12 she's still moaning on about it today
