Advice needed on meeting other dogs Empty Advice needed on meeting other dogs

Would like some advice please guys, on how to get my dog to meet other dogs nicely when out and about. She is boisterous and playful, and will sometimes charge straight up to other dogs wanting to play or other times she will just stare at them and lie down on floor then slowly stalk towards them. Often I'll lead her up when i see other dogs around, but i feel this isnt solving the problem but avoiding it as it means she isnt meeting other dogs at all, and she will often pull towards when on the lead. Some of my family and friends have dogs and she gets on really well with them. Ive read the article on here about body language, and i do feel she isn't being aggressive but she doesn't understand other dogs might not want to play with her. She is 2 years old approx and Ive had her for just over a year, Im not sure much about her history except she was left home alone for long hours each day. Any advice welcomed.

There's nothing wrong with leading her up to other dogs & introducing them on lead. In fact, that's what I always do, and I wish others would do the same with me!

If she pulls you, get her to sit for a few seconds & focus on you; hold a treat in front of your face & tell her "watch" or something similar, and then move on again. Eventually she'll begin to see that she won't get to greet the other dog until she's calm & walking nicely.

Couldn't agree more! I think your doing the right thing tbh. and as Caryll said get her focused on you first. If the meet and greet goes well onlead then let them off Smile

Thats what I'll continue to do then, thank you. The thing that worries me with that is I know I get nervous and tense and i dont want her to pick up on that, but thats something i need to work on! I take her to an obedience class, so going to have a chat with the trainers next time I go too.

Nice to know I am not the only one. Like you I dont know Pixees first 14 months history. I never know if Pixee is going to play or attack other dogs. Her back hair comes up, some dogs she is ok with, but I cant take the chance, as she seem to want to take a nip at some of them and its that that worrys me. We have to keep her on a lead, however there is a nice man that lets her play with his two dogs, but the one is getting more rough with her, and I cant let her off the lead, so she gets wound up more. He said, why dont I let her off the lead and let her play. I just cant take that risk. I tend to sit her to one side, and let other dog walkers go by. They see a staffy and they just think the worse sadly.

Good advice from Caryll and Janey. You also need to relax. They can feel your tension and could react to it. I dont know how young your girl is but they do have to learn proper dog etiquette and this comes as they socialise more. When they are still little they have 'puppy credentials' and most well socialised dogs will recognise this and so tolerate some of her energetic behaviour.
