Thank you for letting me join this staffy group. I seem to have arrived "back to front". Please let me explain...I have been a proud owner of two staffy's. Peggy who died 9 years ago with Cushins disease, and now Winnie who I had euthanized as she had recurring stomach cancer. She left us for rainbow bridge on 23 feb this year. Of course I have been heartbroken as only a dog lover could know just how much, and how many tears flow, and still flow...So here I am a 75 year old senior without my mate. I told my wife that I must give it six months to get over my Winnie..And now is the multimillion dollar question. Should I at my age consider another staffie..We live only walking distance to the beach so the walking is no problem. I am interested in staffies in particular, and dont want another breed.Oh and I forget so say I live in Queensland Australia....Any comments would be appreciated..Regards from down under

Hi and welcome from me and Vinnie. I see your dilemma, but I think as long as you are fit and healthy and able to provide adaquate excersise then I cant see much of a problem. You are obviously experienced dog owners, maybe a rescue older dog would be the way to go. Big Grin

Hi and welcome from Me and Steffi Big Grin

Firstly I need to say so sorry for your loss Crying or Very sad

Then, OMG the rate of cushins disease in dogs must be miniscule Surprised My mother suffers from this same disease, and it is extremely rare.. Hardly anyone knows what this even is..

And lastly at your age please do consider an older dog from a rescue.. There are so many golden oldies in Australian rescues that nobody else wants Sad They will need less exercise but plenty of love and care Smile

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me

Would you consider a slightly older rescue dog, I'm sure you would have as many in the rescue centres down under as we have here in the UK, please check the list below for somewhere in your area:

Welcome Big Grin sorry to hear of your loss. I see no reason as to why you shouldn't get a Staff as long as you can give it the amount of exercise. But if you aren't quite active enough to keep up with their insane amounts of energy, maybe as has been said you could rescue an older dog, as there are so many of them, and they aren't as sought after as the younger dogs, of course.

Hello and welcome from me and the kids Big Grin

Sure only you know what you do and don't feel up to , obviously a pup is going to be hard work and maybe something you don't want at your age (I wouldn't) but an older rescue sounds so appealling and they do tend to get overlooked

Hi and welcome from us and Suki.

Sorry for your loss and glad to hear you are thinking about getting a new dog. As long as you are healthy it shouldn't be a problem. I would suggest looking into rescuing an older dog though as a pup might be a bit much.

Well I must say I was surprised at the many replies and I thank you all.....Yes I have considered rescue dogs, but somehow I have been looking at breeders with dogs that are a few years old, I am wary of getting a rescue dog as I have no way of knowing it medical history....We spent over $6000 dollars on Winnie, giving her our best shot, this made quite a hole in the finances, but we have no regrets.....I have told the boss!! that I will wait six months before I decide what to do...As for exercising the dog , I am fairly fit, ie play table tennis three times a week....Thanks again and I am getting into this site for the interesting ideas etc...

Hi & welcome to the forum.

I'm so sorry to hear about Peggy & Winnie, it's so hard to cope with the loss of such wonderful companions.

https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t13988-rainbow-bridge

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't get another stafford once you're ready - as long as they can have the exercise they need and the love I'm sure you can give them, then there isn't a problem!

Hi & welcome to the forum >Big Grin<
So sorry to hear of your losses. I think age isn't that important as every person who is the same age are different. If you feel like you can cope with a puppy and thats what you want then go for it. I hope to have dogs as long as I can and if I'm still fit and healthy at 75 I would get a puppy in a heart beat. What ever you decide be sure to coe bck with plenty of pics, stories, advice and questions thumbs up

Hello again, Been quite awhile since I was here...It took time to get over the loss of my beloved Winnie. But to bring you up to date I am waiting for a rescued dog called Willow, she has been rescued the from the pound, poor thing is so emaciated her ribs are noticeable right up to her spine, she's just over a year old, her pups were found in two different places. fortunately found by some caring people....she is so small and may be part something other than a staff, although she looks 90% stunted staff...I cant wait to get her home. I have so much respect for all you carers out there, no matter in what country you may reside. And I dips me lid to one all...Thanks and byeee for now..

Please, please, please let us have some photos when she comes home!Big Grin
