I've just watched this for the first time and it's not only tragic, it's disgusting. The KC are going to that same place reserved down there for lawyers, tax men and traffic wardens.
I've only heard of the tendency for mast cell tumors in Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and they seem a hardier, healthy breed, but the thought that dog breeds are going to go extinct because the breed clubs are inbreeding them to death
Thoughts?

Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
This is a hot tipic, so be warned!
My own view is that the programme was pretty biased & only concentrated on the worst of dog breeding/showing rather than the good (and there is plenty!).
However. It also did a lot of good because it made the KC re-write the breed standards to try and breed out the bad, unhealthy traits that have settled in to a lot of breeds - that can only be a good thing. It also meant that the public's awareness of bad breeding practices was heightened and more people are asking pertinent questions when buying pups.
The KC has a lot to do, and it's going very slowly - too slowly for many people - but at least they are now doing something!

Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
the kennel club is not doing enough if they was the inbred test wouldn't be rising
Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
Let's not start another huge debate - it always gets nasty!
We all know the KC is moving too slow, and that there are things they should be doing but aren't. But at least they are doing something, and will do more, which 3 years ago they weren't!

I'm not going to get into a debate about this, but the following is just one of many initiatives that the KC have been working on during the last 3 or 4 years. There are many others, but unless you read the dog papers or get news direct from the KC you probably won't hear of them...

I'm making that my last post on the subject.

Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
The KC are doing things all the time for the health and welfare of dogs actually Steve. Have a look at the link I just posted about improvements to the assured breeder scheme. That's the KC doing nothing is it?
And if it's exaggerations that you're blaming them for, then I don't see how it's fair to put all the blame in their court. It's the breed clubs that set the breed standards and the judges who put through exaggerated examples are more affiliated with the breed clubs than the KC as far as I understand.

Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
yea by letting a dog win cruft who is over 20% inbred why are top vets are saying they not fit for purpose?
Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
My favourite comment during the interview was when the interviewer asked if he thought it was ok for him to have children with his daughter or grand daughter. His response was priceless, and highlighted how little about genetics those in charge actually understand. How do they think that dogs are different from any other animal. An increase in inbreeding leads to an increase in mutated genes and an increase in genetic disformaties.

Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
they banned mother to son dad with daughter when there was a public out cry but they think it's ok to have half brother and half sister is ok i think it going take another public out cry to ban inbreeding altogether, the staffie inbred test was 6.7% it's now be increase to 7% so that tell me inbreeding is still very popular in the show world
Re: Pedigree Dogs Exposed
if you support the kennel club action then this forum isn't for you! i made this forum to protect our breed not to promote inbreeding!!
