Is my dog a staffy?
Hi, my boy is 18months old now, good as gold and we love him loads. We rescued him when he was 3 months old from a family member who wasn't looking after him and kept him locked outside and used to abuse him (mildly).
We were told he was a pedigree Staff but IMO he is too tall. He is 18" from the floor to the top of his shoulder and weights 20kg. Some people have commented that he looks more like an Amstaff and some have said he looks a bit like a Pit, others just assume hes a tall staff. Either way we don't care because he's a real softie, really obedient and we wouldn't swop him for the world. Would just like to know what he actually is
Here are the pics.
What do you guys think?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
He looks very Staffy to me, but maybe a Staffy X back in his family tree somewhere.
He's lovely

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
He does look like he is a bit staff x but 95% staff , you ccan only be sure on breed really if you see mum and dad and have the backup of papers etc /. Good looking boy though and nice to know he has all the typical soft traits

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
No idea but hes so handsome!! I was told by a fellow staffy lover you will never know unless you have a DNA test but there pricey, even then its not 100% accurate.

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
hi and welcome!
He looks a stunner to me and def more staff than anything else. If there is some cross breading in there its very subtle so prob a generation or so back. or he could just be a big staff.
Love that you have taught him to clean his own teath too! great pics and keep us updated in the gallery section im sure he'll get quite a following.

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
Ye hes brilliant.
He gets spoilt rotten but we are also stern with him as sometimes he likes to try and get above my OH is the pecking order, hes very protective over me as he was my dog, so when me and the missus are having a cuddle sometimes he will bark and try to get between us but I know he is just jealous so for the past month we have been taking steps to ensure he knows he's not the king of the castle so to speak. Hes responded really well I'm happy to say, such a clever boy, just at that cheeky teenager era!

In my opinion the DNA tests really aren't worth the effort/money. They'll possibly not even give a definitive result.
Some Staffords are generally bigger. My Logan is bigger that a lot of Staffords I see but he is def full Staff. Even if he wasn't it wouldn't mean a thing though because Staffy X's are just as great

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
Think there is some crossing in the history, but he is very staffyish (although not to standards of a staffy, hence the possible crossing in the history.)
Very cute boy

Re: Is my dog a staffy?
His face reminds me of my boy
He is a staffy and has more staffy in his looks than anything else, his family in the past might of got crossed which made him be taller BUT he's lovely and staffys are not all the same size, my boy is very short not by much but he's a tiny little bit shorter than all staffys that I met
But definitely not a pit or American staffy, im nearly 100% sure, people this days call any staffy thats tall a pit lol

There's a lot of Staffy about him but I also think there may well be something else there too, just not sure what. He is very handsome anyway.

Can I just ask how you solved this as I have a similar problem with my dog?

Basically, everytime we have a cuddle and Jack tries to get inbetween us we make him get off the couch and sit and wait so he knows diving inbetween us and barking gets him nowhere and that he is below us. If he continues to bark then we tell him to get in his bed and wait, then we cuddle so he can see and that normally does the trick.
They are really clever dogs at it hasn't taken long tbh and he is 1000000x better than he was a few week ago. Im in noway Cesar Milan but Ive found the above method has worked for Jack
Thanks for your help everyone
