Need ANY advice
Hi all
I have a blue 1 and a half year old male Staffy.... He has a underbite but still acts like any other normal dog.... I am having trouble with him as he only bites me "playfully" luckily but its everytime I go to pat him or tickle him he just wont stop ... he is not like this around strangers or other family members and friends which is odd..... anyone have an answer as to how I can control this ?
Also how do you go about training them off a lead ? Im worried he is just going to run off and never turn around!
any help would do

Re: Need ANY advice
Hi and welcome to the forum.
As for the biting when giving affection it seems some dogs just don't like it. My dog Logan will mostly get up and walk away if I pet him. He likes his space. I don't really know how you could train out of this, but for me personally I tend to just give him his space and when he wants affection he will come to me.
As for off lead training, the best way is with a long training line and plenty of treats. I do this with Logan with a good deal of success. It gives them freedom and gets them used to being less restricted. It'll also allow you to see what he will do given the option of space.

Re: Need ANY advice
Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
What are you doing now when he does bite you to stop this behaviour, maybe he knows he can get away with doing it to you, other people tell him NO ???
As for off lead walk, try using a long training lead at least to begin with to do some recall training. This will give him some freedom to have a run and peace of mind for you knowing he cannot just run off. Take some treats with you to a quiet area away from all the noise of other dogs and people, which can be distracting and just have some fun getting him to sit for a treat, then call him to you. Just keep it to a few minutes each time.
Always end your training session on something you know he can do well with lots of praise and a small treat.

Re: Need ANY advice
Can't add to what's already been said the long line for practicing the recall (and some meaty treats) is a brilliant method, gives them a good run around while you know the dog is safe, and also helps train them while you do it.

Very good advice as they can get speed up very quick which isnt good when wearing a collar and reaching the end of the lead.

Re: Need ANY advice
In terms of the biting I do think that he is just playing with me ... I can give him cuddles and tickles but then he gets really excited and goes to bite.... im hoping he grows out of it ive been told he probably wont
Thanks for all the long lead advice I will try it at the park .... im just really worried!
Also do your Staffy's shed lots of hair? mine sheds when I pat him I have a handful of his hair on my hand its strange!
thanks

Yes Logan is shedding loads at the moment lol! The rubbish weather and central heating adds to it. I give him a good brush every day with a good firm brush and it really cuts down the amount of shedding throughout the day

Have you had him since he was a puppy or is he a rescue?
Loki doesn't shed much hair, but my old dog did, EVERYWHERE. A good daily brush might help
