dirty diesel boy. newbie
hey, new to forum. we have a blue staff called diesel, hes nearly 9mths now, we have had him since he was 15 weeks. It wasnt until a couple weeks later we noticed a few issues, hard play biting, nervous,no understanding of how to play with other dogs. we found out from prev owner that a vet had advised taking the remaining two pups away from mum at 3 weeks old and bottle feed them! One pup die cause mum left them apparently. Anyway we have had him castrated few weeks ago, he goes training twice a week and am trying to keep a peaceful home as excitement just freaks him out. Hes a lovely boy but hes gonna need a lot of work. im concerned about him not getting on with other dogs as he just doesnt know how to act around them, he nips their legs. I think some of the prob it me as im nervous about this situation as we brought a staff cross pup few yrs ago whilst we still had our older staff. we was walking off lead in park when my older dog growled at another dog, i got hold of him then the pup (6 mths) tried to get this little dog round the throat, luckily he got hes cheek, well he would not let go at all, i tried everything! I was squeezing hes knackers thinking it would make him let go, well eventually he did let go, the other dog was black so te owner obviously didnt see that her dog was hurt but my white pup had blood all over hes face.Well in the end my two dogs started getting aggresive with each other a couple days later so sadly we rehomed the pup. Anyway im sure i will have fun on here now i found you

Welcome sounds like you've had your hands full, but if you need any specific advice, feel free to ask, there are plenty of people on here that will be happy to help or share their own experiences. Is there no way Diesel is playing? Staffs are known to play rough, so is it definitely aggression or is he just being playful and doesn't know how to act?

Hi yes he is playing as such. its not vicious at all, he is quite confused i think. we cant play with him really only with balls and toys, we cant play chase or rough and tumble, he just gets to rough. its not really a play bite its more of a im confused and dont really know what im supposed to do. its just over excitement

Re: dirty diesel boy. newbie
Welcome to the forums, and I'm sure you'll learn a lot from here.
If your boy was taken from the litter to early that's why he doesn't know how to socialise, because they learn that from the mum and the puppies.
Just try to be calm every time you see a dog, trust me I know how hard it is as my dog has bitten 5 dogs badly, it wasnt my fault that he bite the dogs as I asked them to put their dogs on the lead and they wouldn't listen...
Just keep calm and I'm sure you'll be ok specially if you go to classes he'll be seeing a lot of dogs and learning how to play and socialise.

Iam so surprised on my walks how many owners cant control their dogs! mines on lead and dogs just come bombing over with the owner calling them back!! The other day two red setters came running over the owner was calling them but they didnt listen. one of them could smell our goodies in the treat bag and snaffled it from my belt and ate all the chicken for our walk. i would never let him olff lead if he wont come back wen called, do you het yours off at all?DragonTheStaffie wrote:Welcome to the forums, and I'm sure you'll learn a lot from here.

Re: dirty diesel boy. newbie
Yes I know the most important command to let your dog of the lead is come, I your dog doesn't come when called it shouldn't be of the lead! But what annoys me is owners who let them off the lead and just walk and their dog is nowhere near them, and when you tell them to put their dog on the lead they ignore you, that's what does my head in and then when my boy bites and won't let go they start crying? If they cared they would of listened when I warned them!
I do let my boy of the lead in a field that has fences and where I can see if other dogs are coming in, I leave once someone comes though and everytime I see a dog I put mine back on the lead if he of the lead, I don't like just to walk him as it doesn't tire him out as much as playing fetch... But I'm always careful on everything!
My boy knows his commands very well though, if a dog walks past the fence on the other side and aren't coming in I actually go to the fence (he can't jump it) and tell him to sit and lay down and focus on me while the dog is barking or whatever
We've recent rescued a female staffy cross and he loves her, only dog he gets along even though she's always jumping and stuff he's very calm, we rescued my boy as well a year ago and he's afraid of dogs but he is an amazing and calm dog and very obedient, only noticed how amazing behaved he was after dealing with the new staffy we got she doesn't know anything my even her name and is crazy when you take her out, good thing is she's friendly my boy wasn't when we got him so it made socialising hard.

hi. we have a fenced off private school field near us, i ave been tempted to let him off, but im scared in case he sees another dog before i do. i really dont know what he would do. he is very much a clingy following dog so if i was in that situtation i would run the other way. im 90% sure all would be ok but its that 10%, we been training today, about 10 other dogs there, today was a bad day he growled at all of them, then over park, that was mission, football players, dogs, kids, joggers, bikes. it all adds to hes excitement, he was desp straining to get to players on pitch so i just calmly stood there and watched the game. after 10 mins he was not interested and just sat down. I have a long way to go. i will be gutted if he cant be trusted with other dogs. im gonna talk to head dog trainer at training tomorrow night cause hes doing it loads. me rambling now lol

Re: dirty diesel boy. newbie
Hello and welcome from me and Pixee. You will get there, just be patient, keep him on lead, ever a long training lead, and teach him to come to you. It will take time, but time you have. Pixee is from the Blue Cross, and was found a stray. We know she has been beated up. We have had her for 14 months now, very much a member of our family . Her recall was so awful. We trained her on a long lead. In the garden. From a door way. She use to go after other dogs, now she ignores them, however she does know they are there, but wont go to them now. The problem I have now is other dogs coming over to her at full speed, Pixee does not take to this kindly, either do I! I always make sure I have her back on the lead, so I have my dog under control should anything happen, so far nothing has. She does have 5 playmates to play with if we meet up on walks. Her main one is a spring spangie, roughly same age, and both very rough playing. Its just the way they are. We did have issues with Pixee biting. We always said in a firm voice, 'No biting' and ignored her till she calmed down. It does do the trick, but give it time.
