Hello-another newbie!
Hi everyone, sorry if this is an essay! I am new to this site, I am about to adopt my very first Staffy. She is a stunning dark brindle and is 2 years old. I bring her home from the shelter on Monday!
A little bit about myself, my parents bred Rottweilers and my last dog was an American Akita. I won't lie, I don't go for staffies only because I prefer big dogs.
When I visited the shelter, she was the only one who wasn't hyper and barking for attention. She came to us with her ears back and her head low-submissive. That's when I knew I had to have her!
I have an almost 4 year old, we have visited our girl about 5 times now, I told her to jump and shout and pet her all over and she didn't react at all just gave her kisses lol. When another dog from the shelter goes past her and barks or lunges she remains calm. My little girl fell over on the stones and she instantly went over and licked her face as if to see if she was ok. Very good natured dog.
I suppose the reason I joined this site was just for reassurance. I know this will sound silly but I am nervous about bringing her home! I just want everything to be fine for her and want her to settle in.
Sorry again for the essay!
Thanks for reading.

Welcome to the forum!
Staffords are fantastic dogs, you will have a great time. It takes a while sometimes for them to settle in fully, but they will get there.
Start things like toilet training right away, they tend to pick up things very quickly

Thanks for the reply, that's the first thing I am going to do! They are very smart dogs, I have taught her to sit already. She's so intelligent!

Re: Hello-another newbie!
hi and welcome. well done for rescuing a staff and a brindle one aswell
I have a son who is almost 4 and tyke our brindle staff who has just gone four. The are like two pee's in a pod, couldnt ask for a perfect dog for our son. Only thing i would advise is for the settling in period just let them find a relationship as unfortuantley you dont know what her previous life entailed and as you prob already know you just have to be extra carefull.
we wish you all the luck
would love to see pictures aswell when you get her home

Re: Hello-another newbie!
Thanks for the welcome everyone
Thank for the advice. I am already the talk of the nursery because I am bringing a "dog like that" into a family with a child. It upset me because I am thinking what kind of a mother do you think I am? I would never put her in any danger. This staffy I am adopting came from a family with young children-I know this doesn't mean that her and my daughter will get on like a house on fire but it will be easier to integrate her into the family.
People need to snap out of this mentality. It's not fair on the dogs.
I am very excited to get her, took her out again today, my daughter picked her paw up and pet her on the tail and the ears-she just stood there.
We can't decide on a name. I want to call her "A.K" lol (i'm a huge COD geek :p) I also like Harley. I was thinking Lexxi but she's not very feminine looking! My daughter wants to call her roxy but that's the typical name!
Feel free to suggest names!
Thanks again

Re: Hello-another newbie!
Welcome from me and ebony! Congrats on rescuing your first staff! I'm sure you're going to enjoy a lovely life together as they're great dogs! My dog is a rescue dog and she's a lovely natured girl I heard that staffies are one, of the two dogs that are recommended for families by Krufts (or kennel club, my memory isn't too sharp )! So enjoy, can't wait to see pictures

Re: Hello-another newbie!
Welcome she sounds like a very sweet dog who'll be a great addition to your home. She'll probably need some time to settle in and everything, but Staffs are such friendly, loving, good-natured and intelligent dogs, I'm sure she'll do well in her new home. If you have any specific questions, you can always make a topic and ask for any suggestions if you ever feel the need to, everyone here is very friendly. Above all...take lots of pictures to share with us, because we love them

Re: Hello-another newbie!
Thanks everyone for the support.
Tara-yeah I will let her come and settle in and take her time, I know she will be scared and confused because she has been in the shelter but a lot of people do say, they are totally different in a home environment-it's what she needs and if that's what I can give her then I will be so happy.
Rebecca-that sounds like a great idea! Matching tshirts! haha!

I've fallen out with a relative partly because of her attitude towards me owning a Staffy. Although she didn't have the cajones to talk to me about herself and I only found out when her youngest boy (my cousin), who is also four , told me that he wasn't allowed to come to the house anymore before asking 'will your new dog bite me?'.
It isn't a problem with dogs she has as we have another couple of dogs in the house and it had never been a problem until Alfie appeared on the scene.
It really is infuriating but not that surprising. You can blame the likes of the Sun and other tabloids for their sensationalist reporting of some dog attacks.
Anyway, i hope everything goes well with your new girl!
