Gardening, anyone?
Anyone else interested in gardening? I am.. or at least I think so.. so far no garden, but I hope to have a small(ish) vegetable garden when we move. So my boyfriend and my dad got me a little "greenhouse" for my birthday where I have two shelves with light. That way I can start baby plants from seeds indoors.
So far I have 18 chili plants (Lemon Drop, Jalapeno, Nepalese Bells and Filius Blue) and I'm also testing to grow some salad greens.
My little salad leaves are now about 8 centmeters long and I'm starting to feel pretty sure you can grow salad in there while the baby chilies are started (they only need about 1/6 of the space available. so far.)
Basil - growing well, too.. I think I probably need to thin them out a bit more.
Tsoi Sim. I planted the seeds only 10 days ago and they're 3-5cm tall already - time will show if they'll grow large enough for a stir fry!
Jalapeno
My only Lemon Drop chili plant (at least so far no other of the seeds have germinated.. )
Nepalese Bells - I think all of these germinated.. I have lots!
Filius Blue - these all germinated too, I think. And I didn't even sow half of the seeds so I'll have many for next year.. or this year if I kill'em all.

Well done. I'd love to be able to do that, but to be honest I kill plastic plants

I love gardening, and have a section of the garden to grow veg aand stuff, but as soon as anything sprouted the bl**dy squirrels ate it so i gave up
Billy is now working his way through the plants and bushes, so very soon it will be bare

I have an allotment, and we're working on what's going to go in this year. Potatoes, beans, cabbages, broccoli, onions, marrows, courgettes & garlic. Plus we're looking at something 'different', but not sure what yet!

Good choice, but Spinach Beet is easier to grow, doesn't bolt so quickly and tastes just as good!

With Spinach Beet you can cut some leaves to eat & then the plant will continue growing so you get loads!

Re: Gardening, anyone?
can you grow spanish beet in pots?
yes well done, i did have a full size one about 19 years ago, but i got it at the wrong time, my eldest was a toddler and wanted to be anywhere exepct the allotment, so i gave it back. it was in a really good spot near the water and it had a shed. i could kick myself now

I think they're ok in pots, but I'd make them quite big pots as the beet can get quite big.

Oh cool, Caryll - I love the concept of allotments!
We're going to have quite a few things - even if some of them die early
In raised beds:
- beans (french, soy, borlotti)
- sugar snaps
- corn
- yellow crookneck squash
- carrots
- onions
- oriental greens (pak choi, tsoi sim, kailaan)
- summer cabbage
- brussel sprouts
In pots/buckets:
- herbs
- tomatoes
- potatoes
- strawberries
- cucumbers
- chilies

Strawberries are really easy to grow in containers & taste so much better than shop bought ones!
We have a large bed of them which we planted about 4 years ago & they just spread & spread. You just have to be careful of slugs, but if you put down bark chippings around the plants you're ok.

It can be very rewarding. Some vegetable plants have really pretty flowers & then you can eat them! Yum!

Re: Gardening, anyone?
we haven't got a garden to grow anything at the back, just a concrete slabs and what mud is covered up from the last dog as he used love to dig hahahaha but then so does bruno , but..... my cousin has sent my children some seeds to grow but so far they are still in the envelope they came in.
I tend to kill plants, my mum was the green fingers in the family, she used have different plants but grew many african violets english ones and she used bring leaves home from america to grow as well , this was her hobby

Re: Gardening, anyone?
We have tried several different things but since we can't keep the dogs out, I haven't been too sucessful. I think I am going to start a study to find what plants dogs don't like hahaha. Our climate is really dry and the dirt is like cement which makes growing hard. I am thinking containers this year. Just bought an artichoke plant, can't wait to see how that works out.

Re: Gardening, anyone?
Cool - two of my favourites! I know I'll be a bit late with the garlic this year, but I'm going to try anyways. And I just added a fifth kind of chili, hope it's not too late for them to get some fruit. They've sprouted yesteday and today, so they are almost 2 months behind the others.. Picked some seeds out of a "Ot Hiem" chili from an asian store. Tiny, hot and very tasty, so with a little luck we might grow some of our own.ella wrote:I am going to try and grow some chillies and garlic this year, never really been into gardening before but decided to give it a go!
I'm going to do everything in raised beds and pots/growbags (love the ones from Ikea, hope they get them here soon) so the dog won't be a problem, but the cats are a pain with the seeds and seedlings.
Re: Gardening, anyone?
We've been away just over a week - and I came home to a jungle. Very happy nothing had died while I was away - I actuall came home to..
baby chilies (this is a Filius Blue)!
Baby Jalapeno
The filius blue really is a pretty plant imo.
