Help with crate training new puppy
Hi Everyone,
I just got a lil girl staffy called Luna. I'm trying to crate train her.
Last night was her first night here and it was not fun for either of us.
We spent the day ok getting used to her crate and she even had a sleep in there, all ok, but when it came to bedtime she was so distressed, she howled, trashed everything and pretty much did it all night.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to if I'm doing anything that I shouldnt be or if there is anything I should be doing that I'm not already.
I know shes not gonna be perfect straight away and leaving her mum and stuff is going to unsettle her, I want to know if there is anything I can do to help her settle, last night was heartbreaking to listen to

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
its heartbreaking i know but you must persevere she will calm down in a few days. Whatever you do dont go down and let her out she will do it all the more. You could put a few toys in the crate and cover it with a blanket this will make her feel more secure.

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
I didnt let her out but I did have to go down and sort her crate out as she kicked her water everywhere, and pulled the blanket covering her crate through the bars and started to chew it up, I ended up taking the blanket off the top and going back up stairs, she had bed, blanket, chew toy, food water and a place to go the loo.
I just felt really mean ( and I'm surprised she didnt wake up half the street she howled so loud)

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
Also as she has her bed in her crate, when she falls asleep (mostly on the sofa!) Ive been picking her up and putting her in her bed in her crate, in the hope she will understand thats her safe place and just for her and she can sleep in there. I dont mind her sleeping on the sofa but I'm wondering if while shes getting used to her crate I should be letting her sleep on the sofa?

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
I got my pup 3 weeks ago and we are crate training her. The first night I was up and Down. I hive her plenty of cuddles as I thought she would be unsettled being away from mum too. Second night she was much better and slept through from night 3. She would cry whe. I left her.but settled herself after a few minutes. I left radio on for her and put hot water bottle. Teddy and blanket om her crate x

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
I think it will take a few days and she will settle down at night . Personally I wouldn't mind where she sleeps during the day, the hot water bottle is a good idea Its horrible to hear though I am sure.
if you feed her in the crate and pop her in there with the door open little and often during the day , she will begin to enjoy being in there.
You will have to post some pics of the pup

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
Thanks racamoe.
Her food is already in there and she happily goes in there to eat and drink etc in the day its just night time, shes very cuddly and likes to snuggle with you so I think thats why she found the night so hard.
Think I'm just going to have to keep going and hope she settles. I'll try and post some pics now

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
I see you've got some useful info on crate training.
The trick is to take it slowly, expect mistakes, and make it as much of a safe and comfy place as possible.

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
we had noah at 7 weeks, did a lot of research on the breed, on the first night we put him in a crate (which i'd never heard of despite having dogs all my life) with a pillow case stuffed with a hotwater bottle and a ticking wind up clock, he never made a sound all night and 7 months later still has'nt made a sound,
were we lucky??? or is he golden?? bit of both i think

Bacchus plays with a Rhodesian Ridgeback who is called Luna but I think her name is short for lunatic.

Re: Help with crate training new puppy
Had major progress with Lil Luna Pup last night, Hubby was on earlies so I said I'd stay up with pup so he could get to sleep before she kicked off, after playing with her until she fell asleep I put her in her crate and she happily got in her bed, I turned everything but the TV off and left it really low on a music channel, then curled up on the sofa for a bit, she woke up and started to whine so I went over to the crate and clicked my fingers to get her attention then went to the end of the crate near her bed and clicked my fingers again, pointed to the bed and just said "Bed" ... she whined a few times at me in protest then went and got back in her bed (I gave her masses of verbal praise for doing it) and went back to sleep, she did this about 5 times in the night and that was it! she responded to the clicks really well and seemed to get what I was showing her, she also now listens to the command "down" and will lie down in her bed (she was sat up moaning at me for telling her to get into bed) and also she responds to "quiet" if you ask her as well, she such a clever pup, so tonight I'm going to get in bed and hope that if she wakes I can come down and get her to go back to sleep quickly again, fell so much better and she seems to as well, shes happily gone in her crate today and slept for a few hours and not bothered about being in there, so really happy now
