How did your dog get their name ???

First topic message reminder :

Was their any history or reasoning behind it sometimes there are some good stories to be had out of such things

Tilly was invented between 3 of us in the car 30mins before we went to look at her and take her home with us in a cardboard box

Tommy was named in honor of my wife's very much loved deceased Grandad John Cooper - jus like that

Ahh I love this thread Biscuit was named Cookie Monster originally because her fur was cookie coloured and the monster was added because she was bloody horrible But when she decided that she was going to eat me and we could be friends we used to joke that she came from the broken biscuit factory, and as we already had a staffy for rehoming called Cookie we changed it to Biscuit!

Cassius is named after the great Cassius Clay or better known as Muhammad Ali. I'm a big boxing fan and i thought it was a cool name.
it was almost Sonny, after Sonny Liston.

Ledger was a George at rescue but it really didn't suit him then when I kept checking back on his profile pic he had the biggest grin just like the joker so he was nearly a Heath but he reacted better to a two syllable name

Skye was nearly dotty as her kc name is dotty blue but I didn't fancy shouting it at the park so we went through so many names and she responded to Skye so it stuck although with all the noises she made she could have so easily have been named piggy

Buster was boss at his previous home but i didn't want any connection to it he was also a very scared 5/6 month old pup who wanted to hide. We thought of boo but as he was with us a few days he became cheky at times so buster it became although he gets called boo when he's in a scared frame of mind

Dempsey was named after Jack Dempsey!

I wanted to call him Captain, but I was overruled!

We always talked about having a dog and always said to call him Nate and match the cats nam of coolio. Then Jon decided he wanted to call our dog Randall I didn't like this one bit. Then when we brought buster home we sat debating then just said we will just see what his little character is like then decide. We took him to a friends he did a * on the floor and it was decided buster!!!!

That's what everybody else told me!

The family I bought him from had already called him murphy.

I asked and they said because its a good irish name.

Upon further questionning it turns out they had no connection to ireland and neither did the dog......

Shadow got his name because when i got him he followed me around a lot:lol:

We had a number of names in mind for our first pet but none of them seemed to suit. We eventually settled on Noosa, after a place in Australia we had a great time in.

However, after having this conversation several times:
"What's her name?"
"Noosa"
"Looser?"
"No, N oosa."

...we quickly abandoned it. Standing in a park shouting what people think is "LOOSER!" would probably not be ideal so the wife ended up choosing Mia out of the blue.

Axl was named not after the band Axl Rose as most people think but after a character out of The Almight Johnsons, a tv show, we love the show

maisies was picked by our daughter of the internet her middle name ( mia ) is after our 14 month old who passed away
blain was by the grand kids and ourself

Flash got his name cos there was what looked like a lightening streak down his nose . However it became apparent during early puppy days that being named after a floor cleaner was more apt . Lol

Ebony was already named when she came into the rescue center with her brother; as she knew her name and her brother didn't really know anything at all we kept it as ebony so it didn't confuse her brother after he got rehomed before her we thought it wasn't worth confusing her by changing her name and we couldn't think of anything else to call her! Since she's mainly all black ebony seemed to quite suit her!

There's some great reasons behind names on here though guys biscuits name is great

Buck got his for a few reasons :p
because i wanted something short and easy for him to remember.
I also loved the book The Call Of The Wild when i was younger and the main character (a dog) is called Buck
also Uncle Buck is one of my favourite films haha

he also gets "buckaroo" now because of the way he reacted the first time i tried his harness and collar on him lol

Similar to a previous poster Storm was a rescue and I didn't want to add to the confusion with a new home so kept it. If I ever have a dog that requires naming I think (especially if it's a Staffy) I'm going to call it Oi, Storm responds to Oi just as well as he does Storm as it is...

Rudie was called Roo when I adopted him from Dogs Trust &, supposedly, had a bit of a chequered past. Roo didn't suit him at all and I wanted something that would make the transition simple for him.

In the car after our walk Message to you Rudy by the Specials came on my IPod and that planted a seed:-

" Stop your messing around, Better think of your future, Time you straightened right out, Creating problems in town"

and that got me thinking about the Clash song Rudie cant fail and it was clear that such a cool dog needed a really cool name & he had to be Rudie!

Great way of picking a name, relevant lyrics

I chose Otis cause Hubby and I are big horror film geeks and my favourites are house of 1000 corpses and devils rejects by rob zombie and one of the main characters is called Otis b driftwood and I loved the name Otis for a pet so when we got the wee fella home he was just definitely an Otis. But we have people singing to us under the boardwalk when out on walks thinking its for Otis redding we just smile and say yep that's why we are huge fans...easier to say that than explain real reason and look like creeps for naming our dog after a psychopathic serial killer lol x

Poppy got her name as we first spotted her for sale on Remembrance day....(we picked her up the following day). It was the first name on the car journey to get her that we both agreed on so it stuck. Suits her with her colour too
