Small breakthrough
So i am probably getting a bit ahead of myself but i am so proud of alfie. I have started giving him treats every time he goea to the toilet outside. Tonight he has earned 6!! Everytime i open the door he races out there to wait for a treat. I stand there for a few minutes ignoring him then he goes off and has a wee! He has never been so many times in one night so HOPEFULLY he is starting to get the message

Re: Small breakthrough
Yay well done Alfie Thats how we trained Maggie, she has caught on though she thinks her just going outside and standing there for a bit warrants a treat when she comes back in She stands next to the pet food cupboard stock still looks at you then looks at the cupboard and back to you again as if to say come on mum I went outside and everything

Re: Small breakthrough
Well done. It's just a matter of keeping it up and he'll get the message soon.

Re: Small breakthrough
He went outside 3 times this morning before I left for work - that in itself is a miracle! Im lucky if he went once before I started with the treats

He's obviously a smart boy and getting the point. Make sure to let us know how you get on when you get home.
If he makes a mistake don't be discouraged though, he sounds like he's on the right track

Re: Small breakthrough
Thanks Matt will do! He did have his usual accidents in the night last night but he wont learn in 1 day will he. I may try having him on my bed again because he held it all night last time I did that - obviously couldnt be bothered to get off the bed to go

Re: Small breakthrough
He just needs to learn to hold it at night - anyone have any tips for this?

Re: Small breakthrough
The only way I think it is possible is by getting up in the middle of the night for a week or so and letting him out for a pee, thus breaking his routine. Then praising him when he does go outside. Also, try maybe feeding him a bit earlier in the evening if possible, Logan drinks the most just after meals.
I know it's an absolute curse to have to get up to let him out but imo it's the only way. I had to get up at like 11pm, 2am, 4am when he was tiny. Only for a week or so though.

I was dreading someone saying this Did it work though? I take it Logan holds it all night now?

Re: Small breakthrough
Logan was very good at toilet training. Albeit, I really did put a big effort into it, the only thing that matters to me in dog training is toilet training and friendliness towards people/dogs. Anything else is a plus in my eyes.
As I said though, it meant me getting up a lot! But when a puppy is 8 weeks old (ish) they can only really hold their bladder for a few hours tops so I expected that. As they get older they can hold for ages. Alfie is just stuck in a routine as he was never taught by his first owner. I'd advise setting an alarm for about 2 or 3 hours after bed time. Then get up a bit earlier in the morning and get him straight out.
It's a curse, but it'll only be for a week or so then you will be sorted. Logan is totally reliable in the house. He knows to stand at the back door and either bark or howl for me to come lol. It worked for me under these rules...
1.Take them out before bed
2.Get up in the middle of the night and take them out again (whether they want to or not.
3. NEVER EVER punish or tell the dog off for making mistakes.
4. Praise heavily when they do it right.

Re: Small breakthrough
Ok I will definitely try this - anything to have a clean house! So you would recommend just getting up once in the night? I had him on my bed last night for the first time and heard him go downstairs in the night to go to the toilet, i just wish I had gone to let him out!! Its my own fault.

Re: Small breakthrough
Hmmm, maybe twice for the first few days just get the ball rolling then once after it starts working. He will have the ability to hold it in, but at this stage he doesn't understand that he is meant to.
It'll only be for a week or so...I promise

Re: Small breakthrough
I hope so well its definitely going to be worth it in the long run. Is this how you toilet trained Logan completely?

Re: Small breakthrough
Yea this is what I did. If I'm honest it prolly took me 2 weeks ish to have him 99% trained. But I was getting up without fail (I only get 3-4 hours sleep most days anyway so it wasn't too bad lol).

Re: Small breakthrough
And did you just stop all of a sudden? I definitely going to try this, even if it means I am like the walking dead the next morning
Guest- Guest
Re: Small breakthrough
I'm always like the walking dead, over worked, under slept.
He didn't really stop all of a sudden to be fair, it was more like a few accidents here and there then gradually nothing within a few weeks. My house is all wooden floor downstairs so I'd have heard his wee feet patter about on the ground and I'd have ran straight down and put him out.
In the long run as you say it is worth it.
