can anybody tell me what to expect when Tia comes into season for the first time? never had a female pup before so no idea what to expect! what signs are there? what will she be like? do i have to keep her in at all time during this?
and roughly what age do they come into season? She will be 5months in about a week.

Thank you Big Grin

Well, it's all about averages, really. She can come into season the first time any time from now until about 18 months old, but nearer 6 or 7 months usually.

They all differ as to how they cope with it. Some are a bit irritable during the first few days, some sail through it without a hiccup in their temerament!

You should look out for her vulva swelling & a bloody discharge (I'd invest in some doggie hygiene pants for the day time!). I used to walk my bitches as normal, but on lead only, at less busy times for the first 10 days, then for the second 10 days or so I'd walk once a day, either late night or early morning, again on lead only.

The thing to remember is that dogs will be interested in her from day one, but she will only be interested in them from about day 13 or 14 & then for about 3 - 5 days. During that time she will act like a complete tart!

As per above. My girl was 9mths on her first season. The swollen vulva is first to be noticed IMO, my girl will swell up about 2-3 weeks before any bleeding.

Shes fab at keeping herself clean, her first season was by far the messiest/worst. Now she knows what to expect, it's no big deal x

ha, just been through this, Tash was 7 months when she came into season. Thought she was ill, she was very clingy and looked sorry for herself, then we noticed a bit of blood, then her lady bits swelled so she looked like she had a baboon but then there was lots of blood and it seemed to last forever. 4 weeks in total.

I walked her as normal every day but kept her on the lead and away from places where i knew dogs would be. There were times when she had to sniff everything on the walks which was very annoying.

Thank god its over is all i can say, hopefully it will be easier next time.

I couldn't go through it again. In tact male, off lead, trying to mate with my girl, who wasn't saying no! And that I was taking all precautions with her. On lead, off the path Sad

I was bundled into a park wardens van, if he hadn't shown up god knows. Trying to carry her wasn't easy, and the dog wouldn't leave.

Most will know I am all for neutering and especially when male owners think they can let there dogs wander when female owners, who have to walk there dogs when on heat are careful.

If a bitch on heat has to kept on lead then an entire male should be also.

Hi,
Stella was around 11 months, first she got swollen, then blood, then even more swollen. It looked painful but she seemed fine. Her * were swollen a lot as well and they stayed bigger until she got spayed 3 months afterwards - people were asking me whether she had had a litter recently Rolling Eyes
I must say it was very peaceful otherwise and she was not interested in dogs and dogs were not overly interested in her either but I was only walking her on lead and stayed away from too busy places.
Then I was so worried about the spaying but she went through it no problem and then a couple of weeks afterwards everything was the original size again.
Some people say that subsequent seasons are much worse when it comes to dogs' interest.
I hope it will be all smooth for your girls as well Love Struck
