i need a little help............
So as i have mentioned before, tyke is over weight which is my fault due to me been naughty with * bits So as per discussed i have mentioned changing food, the raw diet appeals but i just dnt have the space at the moment or a butcher who will help! so i have decided on wainwrights and as we were down at PH i got him weighed, he nearly broke the scales, the till lady 'kindly' told me she has a staff who is half the size of tyke and yes he is fat! cheers love i already figured that one out!
What i need to know is what does tykes ideal weight need to be? now baring in mind he is long legged shoulder to paw over 1ft and compared to missy my sisters staff he taller than her. Now his shoulder has healed from where he has pulled it im upping the walking time and pace from the average recommend time.
Also how much should i be feeding him as i presume i shouldnt feed him for his weight he is at now..................

Whatever you feed (whether dry or raw) the amount you give should be the recommended amount for the weight you want him to be, not the weight he is.
Yes, for a while he will seem to be hungry, but it's for his own good! You could try splitting his food into 3 meals a day so that he never actually becomes really starving!

Measure his height from the floor to his shoulder, and then see if people here can give an estimate. There's a thread Ella made where people post their dog's height, weight, and other measurements. Maybe browse that and if you see a dog whose height is similar to yours, and their dog isn't overweight, it'd be somewhat of a guideline? That's all I can suggest, sorry.

Well, the correct weight for a standard sized stafford is up to 17 kilos. Now, Tyke's a bit bigger than standard, so if you say 20 kilos to start with and work from that. If you get him down to 20 kilos & you think he's still a bit porky then keep going for a little while longer. If you feel he's starting to lose too much, then just increase a little.

Re: i need a little help............
Ledger is quite tall and is just under 20kg at the moment. He was 16-17kg when I got him from rescue you could see his last rib (not helped by his brindle colouring) and I was worried he was under weight, vet said he was ok (minimum weight for healthy based on the pics on the vet wall) but could afford to put a bit on.

Re: i need a little help............
I'd say 20 kilos would be good he wouldn't be underweight neither would he be over weight.
How much does he weigh now?

Re: i need a little help............
I do a monthly weight check too.
I guess getting him to 20-23 kilos will be a good start and he'll be much healthier

Re: i need a little help............
Might be worth having a chat with the vet too before starting on the diet. I'm sure they could advize as to what his weight should be too.
Could you fit in another walk during the day so he has a little more exercise too ??
