Best type of collar for a puppy
Hi
Jake will be going for his 2nd jab on Friday, so will be allowed to go out for a walk in a couple of weeks. I obviously need to get him a collar ready for this, but which kind? I have seen the puppy collar & lead sets that are in all the pet shops but these look flimsy even for a puppy.
Any recomendations from ones you have used?

Doesn't need anything too strong and fancy because he will grow out of it so quickly.. A nice comfortable leather one with swede on the inside should be alright.. Pets at home do all sizes for puppies and its where I've always started off

Yes my first was from P@H just something basic as they do grow pretty fast! Get one soon and have him wear it indoors, add a lead to it as well and practice walking round the house gets him used to it Xx

Just something nice and lightweight. Don't spend a lot because he will grow out of them very quickly, as the others have said.

Personally I wouldn't put a leather collar on a 3 month old pup. I'd get a padded nylon collar from Pets At Home instead, just my opinion though!

Re: Best type of collar for a puppy
To start with I used a soft cat collar (minus the bell!) just to get him used to something around his neck. Then he had a small plain nylon collar and lead, progressing to stronger ones as he outgrew them. He now has a Softex Half Check which is very strong but supple & doesn't rub his fur or his skin.

I am very interested in this topic...... would any use a harness??? I was thinking if I got her used to a harness for walking it would also work as a seat belt for when we go in the car? Ideas and thoughts please ????

Walking them on a harness makes it harder to get them to walk to heel, as they can pull harder because the weight is distributed over there chest and not just on the neck! I prefer a collar.

I prefer a collar as well, although many people use harnesses to good effect.

Re: Best type of collar for a puppy
Thanks all, I was thinking something cheap (ish) as he will grow out of them quickly. I will go to P@H tomorrow & look for a padded collar of some sort. The really cheap puppy collars just look so rough & uncomfortable.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

At a later date (when he's done a lot of growing) you might want to look at a harness. The trouble with a young pup is that good, well fitting harnesses are expensive, and he'll grow out of three or four before he's fully grown!

The harness was the best thing I ever bought. If anything, it stopped his pulling and he walked better. But I didn't start using it until he was about 8 months. I feel a lot safer when its on.

We used a cheap and basic collar and adjustable harness.
